I dont understand fighting games at all. I bought Skullgirls because it has a deep tutorial and ordered an arcade stick (which hasn't arrived yet so I have to use a ps3 controller for now) but I have absolutely no idea how you guys can play these games.
Even when I have memorized a few combos/moves I rarely get an opportunity to use them in a match and I have to fall into my safe technique; button smashing, at which point I usually stop playing because it's just not fun. What can I do differently? How do I learn this shit?

Combos are the least important part of learning fighting games.
You need to learn neutral and footsies first.
Basically, how to play the game with nothing but your normals.

I'd say KI and SG's tutorials are about on equal footing. KI teaches you more fundamentals, but you only get to learn in the context of Jago. SG teaches you the basics of every character.
