it's a variation of a speech Anita Sarkeesian gave in front of Dice. She implied that female gamers were usually scared off by most modern triple A titles because of the brutality. I think I'll pass on this one, game doesn't look that great and what I liked about Mirror's edge was that you started with all abilities, techniques since the very beggining of the game and you "get good" with them.

>>
>>334353632
That was actually brilliant design.

IIRC, the certain objects were colored to show how they were interactable Instead of it being some glowing, "You can interact with this!" bullshit, it was segued into the art direction of the game, giving it a unique look and showing a unique intuitiveness.

And the original game never showed you were the hell to go either.

IMO, the solution would be to just make the effect more subtle and to design the levels organically so that it would be natural for someone to figure out where to go and to spot alternate routes and such.

The problem with that is that the open-world structure will surely affect the level design.

Based on that video there are a few problems

The voice actor is completely different. I don't envy her having to take up the job after someone else established it.
Movement seems too fast with no weight or impact behind it. I guess this is to make the game more fluid, but compared to the original, it just looks less impressive.
Moving through vents was way too fast and looked comical
The UI was too obtrusive, I mean, health bars? Come on. The red fog thing that shows you where to go also defeats the point of the entire game, and parkour as a whole. I am fairly sure you can just turn it off though, which I will do.
Oh, and fighting needs to be way harder. Based on that video it was piss easy and also contradicts the first game where you had to avoid the guards (mostly anyway) and guards were actually a problem. But I guess they wanted the player to feel like "an ass kicking badass xd"

Game looks nice though, will probably buy it since I'm sure it will be enjoyable. I just wish they would fix the things I listed, and the things other people pointed out.
>>
>>334354281
But then you run into the problem with portal 2, you know the "oh which white wall do I portal in which order". I honestly think red telling you where to go was fine because it actually helped the gameplay. It wasn't as much a puzzle of where to go but how to get there.

They should have expanded on the movement, a few more combinations and variations could have easilly made it fresh. If you could combine every move, you would double the amount of moves by adding just one more.

>>
>>334354678
Outside Xbox has a large, 10 minute video of two people detailing how the game plays

Guards are indeed piss easy (light combat attacks are build to keep runner's momentum so you can literally smack them and keep going, heavy attacks are for knock-outs and can send guards barrelling into eachother) and you can even earn an immunity to bullets the faster you run, which is fucking dumb

On the plus side though, not only is the stupid red fog able to be turned off, it's literally only for guiding players through open world- it shuts off in a mission and forces the player to figure out how to accomplish an objective themselves
>>
>>334354770

>Moving through vents was way too fast and looked comical

Probably addressing the complaint from the first game wherein vents broke up the free-running too much and were tedious to get through.

>Oh, and fighting needs to be way harder.

Actually don't care about this at all. With any luck, you'll be able to just bypass most of it anyway - which is what I want from an ME game.

>The red fog thing that shows you where to go also defeats the point of the entire game, and parkour as a whole. I am fairly sure you can just turn it off though, which I will do.

It's been confirmed that you can turn it off.
>>
>>334354990
well I suppose more combinations would be a good start, it seems like they added wall run into vertical wall run. Maybe if you tap the space while wall running you can hop to the other wall, and if you keep the momentum going you can pick up speed.

Maybe small stuff where the correct timing or special combinations let you vault faster, and those that aren't able to handle it can just take the long route.

I honestly couldn't think of anything that isn't just flare off the top of my head, but if you took the basic concepts like "getting higher" "getting higher faster" "crossing one wall to another wall" etc you could easilly come up with something.

Just as long as the move makes you feel faster and you feel involved with it, it should be good

>Probably addressing the complaint from the first game wherein vents broke up the free-running too much and were tedious to get through.

which is funny because if you look at the gameplay there is way too much vertical climbing which was one of the biggest issues ME1 had. ME works best if you keep your momentum and the level geometry only goes for vertical climbs when they can be solved by wall jumping or quick wallrunning. Anything that requires you to stop, look around, hang at a ledge, move a few meters and jump again is just disruptive to the gamplay.

>With any luck, you'll be able to just bypass most of it anyway

I wouldn't count on it. I mean, I hope you can, but then again, I would rather that it would be case of "oh shit guards, they are going to fuck my shit up, time to run" instead of "oh guards, guess I'll just run past them or something"

I also forgot to mention the skill trees. That is the single most retarded decision they've made. Because this is going to be a case of you wanting to go somewhere, to a rooftop or something, and then the game stops you because "lol you haven't specced for coil jump or swinging from pipes senpai, you gotta wait".

I am optimistic about the game, but I just don't understand some of these decisions and why the hell they would implement them, or even consider them.

>ME works best if you keep your momentum and the level geometry only goes for vertical climbs when they can be solved by wall jumping or quick wallrunning.

I'm going to reserve judgement until I play it. In ME1, you could usually circumvent pipes and other tedious vertical climb mechanics through clever use of wallruns, etc.
>>
>>334355598
>NPCs talking on the radio all the time
This is my biggest problem

ME1 was quiet almost serene after whats his face told you where to go. You'd sneak into an empty building and take your time judging where to go. Then when things got hot it was reasonably noisy.

Maybe ME2 paces it out too, but from what I saw in the TUT vid... no it's fucking awful.
>>
>>334355610

>I wouldn't count on it.

As far as I am aware, they have a specific mechanic in ME2 that allows you to knock enemies out of the way while at full sprint. If that is any indication, they want you to bypass fights.
>>
>>334355573
You faggots need to fuck off with your 'Interrupting The Flowâ„¢' shit. Achieving The Flowâ„¢ is supposed to be a hard thing that feels rewarding. If the DICE just gives us The Flowâ„¢, it won't feel interesting and you'll get bored of running and collectibles after a few hours.
>>
>>334355658

>Why not remove vents and just have them be slidey holes that end abruptly?

My guess is that they use vents and elevators to hide loading.
>>
ME1 worked well because the entire resistance sub-plot was in the background. You know it was going on but the reason why you were doing shit was not because "muh anarchy", it was because your sister was fucked and you needed to do something about it.

Here they literally made the resistance the main theme and obviously turned all its gameplay tenets into fucking collectible checklist garbage.
>>
You know?
This game really makes me appreciate ME1.
It's amazing how something like that came out of EA. Someone must have really dug in their heals and promised as hard as they could that this game would be great.

Shame it didn't sell like COD, I bet a lot of people lost jobs.
>>
>get feminists to advice on ME2
>turns into muh oppression
>muh evil corporations
>muh must fight for the good cause

jesus fucking christ. Has there ever been a game inspired by feminist ideals that WASN'T about fighting an autocratic oppressive state?
>>
>>334355834
I'm sure they have a mechanic like that, but I have a feeling they will force out into situations where you can't run. A situation where you have to fight/kill the guards. Now, if this happened once or twice, fine, that happened in ME1 too, but I don't think it's going to be just once or twice
>>
>>334355973
ME1 was regarded as a huge failure by EA before its release. They tried to salvage as much as they could through marketing. (Demon's Souls actually had a similar story with a Sony executive calling the game garbage when he test-played the pre-release version)

The game came out and got universal praise by the gaming community. ME1 is one of these 8/10 games that will be better remembered in 20 years from now than most of the 10/10 shitfests that came after.

And what does Dice/EA do? Turn it into another fucking triple A garbage game that is supposed to emulate Ass Creed.

What the fuck?

This is not how I remember it. ME has always been extremely divisive. Some people love it, others hate it.

Speaking personally, it's my favourite game of last gen. Not even kidding.
>>
>>334356308
I don't think we'll stop getting good games because of people with shit tastes. But it certainly don't helps the funding of unique and good ideas.

The movie industry has the same issue. A movie like Avengers might score better at the box office but 10 years from now I'm probably not going to talk about it and rather think of something like Ex Machina.

Generally speaking any videogame that has its sole focus on what makes it fun is more memorable than the overproduced garbage the Ubisoft or any other company pours out that focuses too much on a checklist of mandatory bullshit the game needs to have.
There is a reason why I have such a high respect for games like Nier, ME1, Dragon's Dogma etc.

They are games that you'd usually rate in the 7 or 8/10 range even though they are far more enjoyable in the long run. They have glaring flaws and weaknesses but manage to achieve its most important aspect in such an outstanding fashion that it completely overshadows the mediocrity or poor aspects of the game.
>>
>>334356413
Not even that, i find the new design to be way more sexist and not in favour of parkour.

She has tighter pants, which hinder movement so fucking much, you wouldnt imagine. The shoes are so wrong and don't look comfy for running at all.

It's overdesigned to a certain point it makes me wonder if they forgot how minimalistic the first ME was.

It's a theme you should keep
>>
>>334356518
I think many reviewers trashed it. But the community seemed to have an extremely positive reaction towards it.
>>
>>334356740
Yeah, in ME1 her design seemed kind of "coolish" but mainly practical. In ME2 they clearly tried to focus her looks on her personality which comes across as some sort of teenager angst.

>Get this instead
It's not even subtle, first ME had only one fucking dot as a HUD, which you could turn off, now there are some stupid health bars, stamina bars, enemy radars etc..
Abilities make it even worse, why the fuck would there be a skill tree, what's the point even? It will just cause the player to not have half of the moves from the first game for most of the game and adds nothing interesting.
Also I can already guarantee that beacuse of open world 95% of locations will be shit to play and they will reuse most of them anyway for dozens missions.

As expected the moment the game shifts from it's linear sections to the open world, rooftops action, there's a clear shift in the levels quality and detail.
It's fine and reminiscent of the original game for the first, but the latter looks empty as fuck, absolutely no surprise here.

The combat doesn't look like an utter pain in the ass, as it's been shifted from breaking the flow to Hit and Run, but

Ever?

Anybody else really dislike the ui markers floating around the screen telling you where to go? I'm really sick of games doing this, minimaps work just fine and aren't as intrusive.

The only time I think I've actually liked them was in JC3 since that game had so much verticality, that navigating the map would've been a pain otherwise.

Man, the open world shit looks like it's kind of pointless in the long-term since every major mission is going to be one linear suggested route and nothing else. The EXP system and various side-tasks and missions are literally Ubisoft gameplay padding.

And that fucking atrocious combat system. They removed all gunplay because it slowed the original down into something it clearly didn't want to be, but then made forced battles a thing where you have to stop and then beat the shit out of enemies repeatedly with varied attack spam while running in circles to keep a Focus Shield up so your 3 health pips don't get buzzsawed. It completely misses the point of why the first game had the counter-based system, because it wanted you to deal with direct threats quickly and efficiently while leaving guns entirely optional if you wanted to awkwardly take out serious threats. But here? NOPE, RUN AROUND THE POSIES AND JUMPKICK NIGGAS ALL DAY
