What? You've never seen Square's iOS to PC ports? That's typical of them. This is the most well done port of them (this is the first FF game on PC to feature mouse support), but all of them have those ugly menus.
Modders usually fix the menus fairly quickly, as they have done with FFIII for instance:

The DS remake is better in every way. Onion Knight is actually a secret class now and the starting class is Freelancer like in FF5.
Whole thing got rebalanced.
Guest NPCs actually join your party temporarily for 5 party members.
The only downside is less trash enemies on screen in battle (was max 9, is max 5 or 6 in this one) but rebalancing made them a bit stronger to compensate.
