There's personal preference, and then there's children who started with the awful 7th gen titles.
Armored Core completely died with 4, a game made by someone who was completely clueless about what fans wanted and put in charge for no reason. As much as I appreciate the Souls series, I'll never forgive Miyazaki for killing AC, because honestly, it was an objectively better series. Nobody wanted their slow paced mech game converted into some garbage where you fly around forever dodging missiles like you're really an anime.

Yeah, and it runs well straight out of the box. Easiest version to pirate is actually the standalone. Mechwarrior 4: Mercenaries. Just a quick google and you'll find somewhere who has a download link from when it was freeware.

No, they're not. They're considered good solely by new fans, because everyone who liked the old games completely gave up on the threads.
If you take a sample only of people who are playing the latest shitfest online, obviously you're going to get a hell of a lot of people who actually consider that cancer good.
There's a reason the series sells like shit these days. Because all of the old fans don't care, and the new ones are a tiny minority who want to live out their shitty gundam fantasies instead of playing an actual mech game.

I like to make a distinction between mech and mecha. One is the western style of fairly realistic machines, of which old AC was just about riding the cusp after they introduced overdrive, and mecha is super advanced robots doing crazy gundam shit. I like the odd mecha game, ZoE is great fun, but I prefer mech games.
How are the Armored Core games on the PSP/Vita?
This is pretty much the only mech game I ever got into that wasn't Mechwarrior, or Armored Core.
I had Metalhead on 32x, but that game was pretty shit, and there was also some crappy cartoony mech arena battle game my friend had on Saturn that I cannot remember the name of.
