My problem with modern Japanese games is the lack of variety. If you want decade old polish in genre they made over and over there's nothing that beats them, but if you want shit that pushes the medium forward, you have you play western games.
Japanese games do not have hard bosses. Once you've beat even a few erastern "hard games" you pick up on strict unchanging trends and nuances in every game that it's not too long until you can shut your brain off while playing. Play Dark Souls 3 when you've started all the way back from DeS as a lay man's example.
Not even baiting here. There's just something so safe and uninspired about the actual fight design in each one makes me wonder if thinking outside rigid formula is banned in Japan.
There are just so many western dev creating new and exciting ways to design bosses that challenge not only your raw skill but also preparation and insight.
It's quite saddening to see an entire culture avoid trying anything outside limited number of routine boss fights formats, when it's clear they're capable of more.

Underrail, while rough around the edges, was one of the most pleasant surprises of this past year in terms of Western RPGs.
Wasteland 2 has a host of issues, but there's no denying that it's also a good game made with lots of love (and bugs, apparently).

Etrian Odyssey games are hardly casual, certainly not devoid of features, and linear doesn't mean bad.
You've gotta learn to use buffs and debuffs wisely and have a lot of control over the customization of your teams, and can even change classes whenever you want, with penalty of course. But its really cool to give your characters useful classes and upgrade their attacks to give them useful status changing buffs and debuffs to take down bosses that use those same sort of strategies against you, and each new boss has a different strategy and way to attack in such a way where figuring out how to appropriately handle each boss is a puzzle. Its fun and challenging and rewarding, and the Untold series went a step farther by even including not only the normal Etrian Odyssey fare, but an actual storyline as well.
Pokemon Super Mystery Dungeon is also extremely far from being linear and has a HUGE amount of content and is probably the hardest Pokemon game ever made. You're pit up against level 50 Pokemon and other overpowered enemies really early on while your Pokemon may not even be in their teens yet. The whole game is based around learning to use items appropriately and preparation before entering each dungeon. The game's storyline is about 25 hours long, and that's just a small portion of the game. Plus, since the game is a roguelike, technically it has infinite amounts of content due to its randomly generated dungeons, where each new trek is a new adventure.
