Is this the shittiest franchise that's generally considered "really good"?
Sony fanboys always hype it up like it's this heavy-hitter franchise that a lot of people care about. At least Halo has a shit ton of content/features and a long running storyline. God of War is just running down hallways mashing square and doing quicktime events. Maybe if it had an awesome combat system like DMC3 or Bayonetta I could see the appeal, but God of War is just mediocre.
Seriously, someone explain it to me. There are people who say that God of War 4 is the game that they're most looking forward to this year. I feel like the only people who are really into it are Sony fan who get involved in online list wars.

God of war was pretty fun to me, I enjoyed the steady escalation of violence by the completely unselfaware "protagonist" who constantly blamed other's for his own failings.
Also the gameplay was generally solid and fun (third game a bit less so), harder game modes were challenging without being annoying, etc.
Ps I don't give two fucks about Sony or any other corporation or their products, so data point of one against your theory. Why didn't you like it?

Nintendo's Top Franchises:
>3D Zelda (giant adventure games that take a long time to make)
>3D Mario (Tons of levels, replayable, pretty much the best 3D platforming franchise ever)
Microsoft's Top Franchises:
>Halo (Big campaigns with co-op, firefight mode, competitive multiplayer, map editor, customs games, etc..)
>Gears of War (Big campaigns with co-op, horde mode, competitive multiplayer, beast mode, etc...)
Sony's Top Franchises:
>Gran Turismo (1000 different cars with a million tracks and modes)
>Uncharted (Super high budget single player with a tacked on multiplayer that is increasingly more complex and actually pretty fun)

One of these things is not like the other. God of War seems more like a Killzone-tier franchise, not the symbol of an entire brand.
GoW is more about the satisfaction of the combat rather than the combat itself. The combat feels far more visceral than its counterparts DMC, Bayonetta, W101, etc. How everything else is designed in the games are designed to support this.
It's stupidly easy but I wouldn't say it's bad either. GoW 3 had some pretty cool boss fights compared to most western games.

Listen. I know that because you played Nintendo games when you were younger, and because Halo was your first shooter, thay these games bring a feeling of nostalgia to you, but don't kid yourself.
Zelda has been on the decline for near a decade now, with the last mainline console entry bordering on abysmal, and Halo is just casual bullshit that is highly praised because it was the firsy popular shooter on consoles.

I enjoy it a lot for the mythology and epic world. They're both done in an engaging and enjoyable way. I've beat 1 and 2 twice and legit can't remember the story at all. All I remember us one cutscene that full in shows you the inside working of a Greek arse crack.

To be honest I don't consider this series the second coming of jesus but I did liked it. Why? because it's a good action adventure game, with really good set pieces and atmosphere, decent puzzles, etc. The same reason I still play medievil 1 and 2 almost yearly. Not every game has to be as "deep" as DMC or bayonetta to be fun. I think this "games that require true skill" meme has gone way too far, back in the day we played games to have fun not to prove ourselves. Besides, I played DMC and it's not particularly more difficult than GoW, just different.

Seeing as MGR is garbage and even worse than GoW, yes, you have in W101, Bayonetta, Viewtiful Joe, DMC4, Ninja Gaiden, and many more. Platinum might be the best as this genre now, but they have by no means perfected it as their games have yet to reach the heights of NGB.

God of war is an excellent trilogy but not really in the same vein at all. Combat is fun but not that deep. The games are more of an awesome adventure with really, really great scenery and an atmospheric, brilliant sound track.
The games have a great, arching mythological plotline. It's not very cerebral but it's fun as fuck. Like a modern, well done, clash of the titans.
I like these games and I play games on all systems, in fact I liked them more than devil may cry. It feels good beating up enemies, I like the gore, I like the presentation, and I have fun playing the game. The added bonus is that it makes devil may cry fans anally violated cause their franchise turned to shit, where as god of war is having another game. Stay mad weaboo fucks, stay mad.

I'd say it and Gears of War fill the same role for Sony and MS funnily enough considering the acronyms. Big budget series with simple protagonists with simple goals and tons of gore and machismo thrown in on top of a very basic gameplay style that is competent but done far better by lesser known contemporaries. They are the Bay Transformers of video games, games made for mass appeal that everyone has played and for the most part enjoyed on some level but probably isn't anyone's favorite series. You more than likely don't hear a ton of actual criticism because most who play them probably just don't think about them all that much.
