You don't get contracted to design just the combat of a game, anon. That's not a normal thing that happens in the industry. Eidos outsourcing their boss battles to another company and Spec Ops: The Line outsourcing multiplayer are very much oddities.
The combat is a core mechanic of the game, and Platinum games have done more than combat in the past. Remember, they used to be Clover, and Okami was a fucking beautiful game.
Platinum is solely credited for the game's whole infrastructure, here. There's different devs for character designs, music, writing, but Platinum is making most of the game, with directions from Yoko, who has found them to be exceptionally enjoyable to work with, particularly given that several younger members of the team working on Automata are fans of Taro's other games and help smooth the whole thing out according to his needs and wants.

The first guy I argued with made an erroneous statement that Platinum was doing "solely the combat", when that's not true. The only role other than writing and directing that we've ever seen Taro take is fucking cutscene editing. Making the basic mechanics of combat isn't going to make the rest of the game that isn't combat magically exist out of nowhere, so saying Platinum's only in it for the combat is fucking stupid. They compose the primary developing force behind most of the game's infrastructure, even if they aren't the ones designing the characters, or doing the writing, or making the music, and even if they don't get final say on whether the town's architecture is acceptable or not.
