I blame bamco marketing for this.
I've been following their facebook since months before DS1 release on consoles and I can say they have all the blame.
They were alright at first but once people shout meme praise the sun here and there, they started to join the bandwagon. It got worse when PC version released. Along with all all those youtubers who crack lore shit and funny pvp videos, bamco started to take a hint to get normies attention and re-post some of those vids on their facebook.
By the time DS2 hits the fan, it already passed point of no return where meme infestation is one of the biggest thing to catter into.
I'm glad Fromsoftware still has dignity by not actually put some meme setup in their game but bamco just had to shit it up by catering to normies in their marketing.
