unless you're willing to manually place .dll files in all steam directories of games you want to use it with (and still no guarantee that it works afterwards), get an xbox 360 controller. If you're on a budget you can't go wrong with a Dualshock 1 or 2 and a converter. I personally prefer the Dualshock 1 since they're more responsive. You shouldn't be spending more than $14 total for this and it works with any game that supports Xbox controllers, you've just gotta learn how to use the very easy x360ce. You can find a converter for just about any first party controller you might have laying around and they'll all work for that too. If that doesn't work for you get an Xbox 1 controller or a Dualshock 4.

DS4 is simple to setup with DS4windows if you're connecting via USB. Wireless is a bit more involved with bluetooth dongles and shit.
Works fine once setup though. Even rumble works. Something I could never get working with the DS3

I've never had issue using any playstation controller on the (PC 1-4. I've even used the twin flight sticks and the PS2 HOTAS).
And the adapters have been plug and play for years now. The adapter I use for my PS1 and PS2 controller is probably like 5 years old and was easier to setup than the DS3 or DS4, since windows just detects it as generic wired controller and works right away.

Alot of people recommend the Xbox controllers in general due to people generally having big hands.
I however dislike the way the Xbox controllers are designed, with the left analog stick being placed in a bizarre spot, so i prefer the Playstation 3 controller over any other

If you only have a small buck on you, Gamestop sold me a big bulky PS3 controller which i used for many years on PC, so try stopping by Gamestop, in case they have a cheap USB controller
