there's a hardware revision coming out soon with mechanical switches for the face buttons, and a headset port

you should have waited

This.

it takes a long time to get used to and it sucks for the beginning, but once you figure it out, it's really REALLY good. I recommend keeping trackball mode on most of the time, but each game you'll start to notice what works and what doesn't. The biggest problem with learning how to use it properly is how massive the customization options are. I recommend looking up woodsie on youtube. He has a huge series dedicated to learning how to use and setup the steam controller and I think it's absolutely necessary. Good luck brother.

Fuck no, it's better than any controller before it, shitty face buttons or no.

Hopefully they get rid of the batteries bullshit and let it be rechargeable or give it an option to be wired. It should also not feel like cheap plastic. The damn thing feels like a chinese knockoff.
>>
>>334239383
Holy crap that thing looks like shit, is that Black disc next to the buttons supposed to be the second Analog stick?

Thing looks absolutely atrocious, if you wanted a controller for Dark Souls, Batman AK or whatever you should've bought a 360 controller
>>
most people that hate the thing tried to use it once and immediately gave up and now cannot accept that it could ever possibly good. Some tried using it for a week and could never figure it out and the same thing happened. The thing is, it's a love or hate thing with that controller. But it has a learning curve. If you are committed to it, you will end up loving it. Every person that ended up hating it just didn't figure it out in the end. I'm not saying they are wrong for hating it, that's a totally valid reason to dislike the product, but the fact is that if you keep up with it and look up some tutorials and try some stuff out, you'll eventually learn to love it. I use mine all the time. It's my favorite controller, but it doesn't replace my mouse and keyboard or my xbox controller. It's sort of just another option I have and I go back between all three.
>>
The best controller on the market save its learning curve, and batteries.
Once you get past the learning curve its equal if not better than the 360

>Anal hurts a lot the first time but if you are committed to it you will end up loving it.
>>
>>334240716
aside from the obvious biassed opinionated bullshit in this post, he is actually correct about dark souls and batman. You wouldn't want to use it with that. The controller definitely has its place, and although it can effectively be used for something like dark souls, I always end up picking up my xbox controller. I end up actually using it for a lot of mouse keyboard games. I used it for Fallout 4 and Wolfenstein. There are a lot of games it works well for and alot that it doesn't, it's like any controller. It's definitely something unique to itself though that you have to learn how to use.

It's a controller, who gives a shit about anyone's opinion on it? It's not like you have to use this or nothing else. The controller has it's place, it has a learning curve and it's fun to use. Some people love it, some people hate it. But if you hate it, it doesn't make a difference, if you love it, you get to use it and it doesn't make a bit of difference guys.

It's not biased, some games are best played with a controller (360, PS3 whatever you like) and some games are better with Keyboard and mouse.

Steam's shit just seems like something in between that is not as comfy as a controller and doesnt offer the precision of Keyboard and mouse, half assed is probably the word.

I got mine a few months ago, barely used it after I bought it, but I just started again with DS III and honestly I'm starting to really like it.

It definitely takes some getting used to, but once you do it's perfectly fine.

My one criticism is that my right thumb gets kinda stiff after playing for a few hours due to the angle you have to make to press the touchpad.

if you do, recognize that it will not be intuitive right out of the box and it takes a lot of time and tutorials to start enjoying it. I hated mine for the first two weeks I had it. A week or so later of not using it, I found Woodsie's Channel and then suddenly everything made sense. Now I love it. Dat thumb flick, dat gyroscopic aiming
>>
>>334239383
It's amazing once you break with the absolutely shit standard layout and start actually adapting your playstyle to the controller.

I went back to play Bayonetta on the WiiU and it's literally aggravating that I can't jump by clicking the left stick the way I do clicking the Steam Controller's left pad. I keep doing it by force of habit.

Take advantage of what the trackpads allow; map face buttons AND mouse to the right track pad so you can click actions without taking your thumb off your aim/camera control. Put jump under your left thumb click so you have the WADS/Spacebar one-handed jump advantage. Map gyro controls to fine aim in shooters when the left trigger is held in.

Get creative with it and get comfortable; take some time to learn a layout that's mechanically advantageous, regardless of proximity to XInput standards, and save it as a reusable template for all games.

If you try to use it as an X360 controller would be used, well, just get an X360 controller. Take advantage of its weirdness to do things an ordinary controller can't do.

the controller is designed to direct your thumbs towards the pads. I find it interesting that you are having issue with that. I can play for as long as I play with a mouse and keyboard with no problem, whereas I cannot do that with an xbox controller. I wonder what the difference is.

fantastic (after the learning curve). I don't know if you have ever used xpadder before, but it has really excellent equivalent built into the system. And it has constant support by steam. Everything is totally customizable and configurable (even down to how things perform, the way haptics feel, everything). It even has that thing where you hold a button and you can make every other function on the controller different. I don't know what that's called.
>>
>>334241963

actually, I have already set that up. Waiting for it to come back. But thanks for letting me know just in case.
>>
>>334239383

>>
>>334242193
So what games does it excell at? I personally love the xbone controller because it's bulky and works beautifully with claw grip for games like Dark Souls and shooters. I can only see steam controller being better for games with little to no xbox support.
>>
>>334242758
so the trend I'm seeing here is that the people that hated it used it and immediately didn't like it and couldn't enjoy it. The people that love it had to learn it with a learning curve and it ended up paying out for them. I guess personally, I don't want to go through the hassle, but it would be interesting to play with someone who has really gotten used to it.
>>
>>334242908
if you like the claw grip, probably don't play it with dark souls. It works really well with typically mouse driven games. Bethesda games, first person shooters, grand strategy, strategy games. Look up woodsie's review of it. That will give you a pretty good idea.

>>

>>
>>334239383
if you bought it to replace a dying x360 controller there's a 10 to 1 chance you fucked up: the bumpers are stiff and clicky, a touchpad instead of a joystick is just so unnatural and weird, and it uses AA batteries. If you bought it as a remote control for a pc connected to a tv, then you have made the right choice: the customization is endless and the trackpads feel great for mouse movement.
>>
>>334242914

The trend is sonyggers rabidly hate it and make these posts/threads since steam triggers them. Though most people have a 360 controller and mouse keyboard to suit their needs
>>
>>334243196
My current 360 controller is still doing fine. The only thing that annoys me about it is a small deadzone that kind of screws with movement. I'm thinking about replacing it with another 360 controller or an Xbone controller but I hear the Xbone controller has occasional compatibility issues. The steam controller was just an impulse purchase from having extra steam wallet money.
>>
>>334240792
A controller should never have a learning curve. The whole point of a controller is to be able to pick it up and play games effectively without needing to spend dozens of hours figuring out how it's supposed to work.
>>
>>334243430
I fundamentally disagree that anything SHOULD fulfill a preconceived notion. The steam controller does not fulfill this idea you propose to be factual, yet it became my favorite controller of all time. Would I rather it not exist just because it doesn't fulfill your standards? No, that's ridiculous.
>>
>>334242914
No, I got used to it, but it's just a shitty controller, it would be much better if it was modular and you could swap out the pads for sticks/buttons or move the pads elsewhere.

Like it was 4 modular pad sized holes it would be amazing

Also needs a keyboard

So how's the build quality of the Steam Controller? I bought a Bone gamepad a week ago and it turns out I got memed a bit. The shell that surrounds the left trigger has a twice as large gap as the one that surrounds the right trigger and the way the plastic is sealed together around the left trigger isn't perfectly lined up so it ends up scraping your hand. Turns out I got the original version of the controller. IDK if the integrity of the controller improved with the newer version but I guess the newer one has better bumpers.

If you're fine with analogue sticks for shooters, IDK what to tell you, man. You do you, you've got weird input preferences.

For my own part, I use it and love it for literally everything, not just games that rely on the mouse to work well. It's great with shitty console ports (because it can hack together joystick messages that emulate mouse movement), and in fact I play Transformers Devastation with it all the time and do well (and that's about as console-gamey as you can get on PC). Also really enjoying it for Hyper Light Drifter, it's excellent for Super Meat Boy, and I love it as an N64 controller for emulators; it does really well at all sorts of games besides shooters (where it OBVIOUSLY excels) but only if you take the time to do appropriate rebinds.

On N64 games, for instance, clicking the right pad fires the C buttons, and the four face buttons are just dupes of A and B. That feels more natural than the X360 or Bone controller with its 4 button face.

For T:D I actually have the right trackpad as aim and clicking it registers face button presses so I can aim without taking my thumb away from the melee commands (I also have left trackpad to move and the left pad click for jump, so I can move completely one-handed without stopping my aiming).

If you try to actually use the left stick and buttons as primary inputs, you're gonna have a bad time. Whatever is primary needs to be the trackpads and shoulder buttons; the stick and face buttons should be ancillary in all cases except those with the most extreme need of control complexity.

I really like mine, but i think the most pleasure i've gotten from it is playing games like Endless Legend, Cities Skylines, and a handful of indie games on my TV, It also works fairly well with older titles that don't support gamepads, though they need a lot of tweaks. But it was fun playing Evil Genius, Vampire the Masquerade, etc. on my TV.

I guess it's pure habit but for "normal" controller games i tend to switch to my 360 pad, so i've not really tried it with those much.

Most first party controllers are pretty neat.

Good
>Trackpads and analog stick are nice
>Can bind in any way you want
>Good ergonomics, when you learn how to hold it

Bad:
>Buttons feel like shit
>Haptics are annoying, can't be turned off by default
>Displays connection error message that cannot be disabled
>Mandatory Jeware to use controller
>Dpad games are unplayable
>Tedious binding UI
>No rumble
>/v/ will hurt your feelings

Actually there's support for the gamepad outside of Steam now. Minimal support is a Xbox / Keyboard Mouse mode switch but there's also a project making it fully configurable.

This is on Linux though and its not unusual for Linux to be ahead of Windows when it comes to gamepad support.

Pretty much the only problem with it is that it takes a while to learn to configure it properly. Otherwise it's a fantastic fucking controller

Cringe talk neo-/v/ stole from Reddit.

There's obviously a bias there as only faggots with some kind of stockholm syndrome like and recommend the 360 controller.

Still tells me nothing about what it means. Is it another way of saying suicide? Because if so, then whoever came up with it as well as everyone who regularly use it should all go red pill themselves.

Been using the steam controller since December. I'm glad I bought it. But it does get annoying when you have to use big picture mode, every-time.

They were a pair of hacks with an interesting idea that other, more talented, people brought to life. Nothing more.

My advice is to put a little bit (two layers ) of electrical tape on the inside of the grip panel.

Helps fix some of the creaking you can get.

Has anyone been able to fix the stupid double input bug you get on startup?

They patched this so you didn't a while ago

What?

So you can use this with literally any game? So it would work with the original Tomb Raiders for instance? Because if so I might be tempted to get one.

What's everyone's experience with shipping time? It said 4-8 business days but mine has been "Shipping soon" for a few days now.
