it was an amazing thing playing online back in 2001 on a 56k modem with other people. a mean, a console rpg online? wow!

i played it SO DAMN MUCH i remember so much about it and i'll never get those days back.

it all ended when i did the stupidest thing possible and thought i could start up my game file before turning on my TV. at the time, i had an older tv, so it had to warm up for a bit and tl;dr i deleted my save file i had with TONS of 12 star shit, rare mags and a good hundreds of hours spent from about 2001 to 2006.

PSO was a complete hell when everything was clientside

Players using Gameshark were able to create weapons that would only work for players using Gameshark. If that player dropped it and and someone who's not using Gameshark picks it up then the server would kick you and you wouldn't be able to log back onto that character since you would just get booted again.

The Dreamcast is the main vidya system that brings back so many great memories. About to turn 29 and I have no idea where the time went, but it was a blast. Playing online on a console blew my mind (didn't have the net at home until '99).

The best use of the modem was for porn

I paid $35 dollers for the attachment.

There is an empty space on the bottom of each Dreamcast, where you can put the attachment.

you buy it and plug it into your dreamcast, then you could go online with it.

so cut your bullshit

NO consoles included the dial up modem.

except for maybe at the end of gen if they released a new version of the console which I didn't hear anything about.

I bought mine the week it came out, I still have it and works great. I only bought the dial up modem to play Unreal Tournament since PSO required you to pay an ADDITIONAL FEE, separate from the online fee for getting you dreamcast online.

Tetris taught me a lesson. Just try new stuff out. Because sometimes it ends up being something truly amazing.

>Plus no one else around me played PSO. It's really too bad.

Somehow we got to know people from even Canada. Were friends with them so much at that point that we even said we'd take a road trip up there when we got old enough.

Of course, these relationships grow cold when the only thing that kept it alive is cut off; we never got v2, and we grew tired of v1 after playing it for so long. I can only wonder what those guys are up to these days.

I got mine in 1999,

and then it didn't have it, and it wasn't until later that they sold it as an attachment......

maybe they released a new version of the console under everyone's noses, which as a marketing point doesn't make sense, you think they'd advertise that the new version of Dreamcast has addons that the old would would have to pay more for.

but then again, Sega was never good at marketing, and that is why the console section of them crashed and burned.

You imported your console then, all units sold in the USA had the 56k modem. The Japanese console, released almost a year earlier, had a 33k modem or none, until the NA launch when they added the 56k adapter by default. The console is not region locked, as evidenced by that it will also play CD-R backups easily, even the ones that were made after 2001 or whenever the cutoff for that supposedly not working anymore is.

>>333919054
All NA consoles came with the 56k modem. The BBA was incredibly rare (they're 150$ on ebay when they show up twice a year).

No, the standard dreamcast had a modem in the box since launch. It's even in the launch brochure. The only models I could even find that didn't have the model are the HKT-5010 for hong kong and apparent some rev 0 models that were for rental places like block buster and holloywood video. Maybe there are other models, but the modem was standard in mainstream models in America and Japan and there was even mention of it in wiki that sega was reluctant to put the modem in there, but was persuaded to.

No need to be a dick, asshole. Just makes you look like an even bigger douche when you're wrong.

Aldo born in 1986. PSO is legit one of the top five games of all time. It's a shame that not only do the sequels not play like it, but there haven't been any copycat games either. Meanwhile garbage like Monster Hunter gets tons of clones despite playing like garbage. I hate this industry. Sega should put Blue Burst up on PSN and XBL and make it cross play with the PC version.

PSO 2 isn't bad, but man does Sega go overboard with the advertising. The last time I played they had an Attack on Titan statue in the lobby, and an ad for Dengeki Bunko on a giant TV across from it.

I kind of want to get back into it though.
>>
>>333921863
Of course m8, the story carried onto online with episodes 2 and 3 (ep3 was aoti only). it took a few chapters to find its placing but you gotta believe me, if you enjoyed the world or characters of PSU, you wouldve loved the online story mode. and the customization, variation, and lobbies made the online fantastic. Events were the best in the series, each one was very different from the last. That god damn feel of completing a mission and watching pink text scroll up saying YOU GOT A RARE MISSION

You missed out on PSU if you never played it online
>>

m8, really? Yes, it was online. Of course the single player mode has very different balance, easymode monster stats and fast level ups, but there was a online mode too.

PSU was pretty shit though, I wouldn't even want to play that one online, story mode was enough.

The problem with PSu comes down towards two different ordeals:
Crafting & Grinding
PP Usage and Skill leveling

The first bit was horrible as you couldn't just 'find' a rare weapon anymore, oh no. You found a crafting board. A crafting board had to use collected materials, and your Partner Machine to build the weapon, and after the crafting board was used so many times, that's it, it's gone for good ( almost all of the weapons were 1 time use BTW ). There is a chance for this to fail, and greater still if your Partner Machine isn't upgraded for that style of weapon. Then even IF you somehow got your weapon, you now have to grind it uup to be as strong as it can be. This was horrible as before AotI, grinding would DESTROY your weapon if it failed. That's it, it's gone for good, go get another board and start again. After AotI though, it became a reset to 0, and the max grind was now -1 of what it was before ( +10 was the cap, but it wasn't uncommon to see people stuck with 5/5 or 6/6 weapons due towards shitty luck. Getting a 9/10 or 10/10 was almost insane ).

Then we have the fact that skills no longer come in 'ranks' of levels, but now directly level up from use, and they will get better at 11, and 21 in use with more options. What this means is till you cap out a skill, you were going to spam that skill endlessly without thinking about it. Rangers had it the worse with bullets as even just ATTACKING ate PP.

...but hey, we had PSO in PSU so that's cool.
>>
>>333922591
Dude theyre COMPLETE FUCKING OPPOSITES. Online phantasy stars dont have you chase a shitty retarded boss in a forest for 30 minutes slowly nipping away at its feet until it dies with terrible clunky shit controls. You go from room to room clearing out spawns of simple enemies into 2 or 3 areas/blocks/sectors and finish the level with a boss fight thats less 3 minutes if youre not trash.

Dont EVER compare MH to PS again you faggot ass cuck

>>333922526

That grind was fun though because it made it seem like you were actually a rookie guardian and you werent a master at all of your photon arts immediately. So you had to train/decide what you were going to become an expert in and learn all the kinks of the weapon.

For my hunter, I ended up sticking with sabers, twin sabers, twin daggers, axes, swords, spears, twin claws, and slicers, so i was usually a fortefighter/acrofighter/fighmaster. For my gunner, shotguns, rifles, and laser cannons were my shit. I was a gunmaster permanently when master classes came out. I always wanted to get into force but could never afford good rods and tech mags so I unfortunately never got to master forces.

My gunner did also sub in as an acrotecher and protranser though. Holy fuck was playing support fun in PSU, acrotecher buffs felt so amazing to receive and give, and dropping freeze and stun traps while shooting shit up with my shotgun as a protranser was fucking fun. PSO and MH both have locked in attack animations, I wouldn't call the controls worse. I'd say better even, it's something you have to adapt to. But I think where people struggle is MH you don't one shot things so you have to learn to play, where as with PSO over time you will be able to one shot enemies before you even have to deal with their mechanics.

I loved both games, but after playing MH I couldn't go back to PSO.

CAST was the best race though, no lie. Tech's in general were nerfed in PSU over what would later be called Photon Arts, and CAST did both Melee and Ranged the best of the the races, with Beast only more HP focused in turn. SUV's though was the best thing, even if CAST were shit statwise, SUV's thematicly were just too cool NOT to pick them just for them. Beast had the super mode sure, but they couldn't customize their Tattoo's like CAST could with their SUV options.

Actually techs and forces ended up being the best in the game for the last 2 or 3 years of the game. Masterforce + GAS upgrades along with various tech buffs and pp adjustments meant they could nuke forever dealing 10x the damage a hunter could ever put out and at a range. Techs in PSO were completely useless until episode 4 in BB, where forces could spam fire techs and take down mobs easily on their own. But in ep1 and 2? They were literally just kept around as buff and debuff slaves, with maybe megid or barta techs for stunning enemy animations.

MAG was great until the boss was unlocked sadly...I remember the meme in the community at the time was to call him dark fish instead of dark falz, since he was just de rol le but with a fucked up cooch for a face. But firebreak, shred the darkness, absolute zero, the lightning carnival, 1up cup...man the events in PSU were always varied and tons of fun.

Casts indeed were the coolest choice and there was no reason not to be them for hunter and gunner, since they had good atp along with ata. SUVs outclassed beast mode in every way. But turning into a big fat fuck furry was kinda cool in its own way. The male beast had funny chat ins and the female beasts were pretty sexy 2bh

Some of the events were kinda spiffy enough ( The winter ice SEED ordeal, the almost burning rangers firefighting ordeal for summer ) but given how far behind we lagged with the JP server, it was a given that we were doomed to fail and miss out on a ton of stuff anyway. I don't think we got the event were you do a fight vs 12 Magashi clones all at once in the end. I do admit though, I liked PSU's story. It's rare for a game to have shitty outcomes get played out, and then have you playing doing the aftermath of such.

I'm glad you remember the names for most of those as I forgot the names for Firebreak and Absolute Zero, yet I gotta admit they were pretty spiffy. I don't recall most people suing techs by the time white...something...god damn it's been ages. But the map with those stupid frogs, became like THE prime level up spot. It was mostly Melee's with axes spamming that one launching PA all over the place because the AoE and knockdown was stupid.

Yeah, Dark Fish was the worse part of it. Yet being able to do all 4 of the areas of PSO and the different branches to get the different NPC partners and their gifts was a cool touch. PSO2 tried to replicate that with the story missions, but it's really not the same and those ended up more of a slog then anything sadly.

I always read it as the latter with "Ma-Ja-Ra" given that's how the Japanese would break it down anyway.

It's so weird to be able to sit down and share all these images I saved up years back when I was playing this game in earnest doing the end of my College years. But it's nice to remanence.

White beast you mean. That was the prime spot for leveling up, had decent mission point payout, and the boss had good drops. Serafi senbas were the shit for years. The launch of AOTI didnt fix forces, that came a few years later. Maybe 2010 Id say. But when they got rebalanced, hot damn did they tear through shit. That axe PA youre thinking of was anga jabroga

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-Ec-earJ2ug

Just ripped through mobs and was just fun plain to use. I think MAG itself was structured very good, the main mission was fun and had nice touches like you said, the counter prizes, the gift shop were you traded in medals, and the top 500 players got a god damn spread needle shotgun. Doing C rank runs of MAG all day caused my 360 to overheat. I wanted that SN so god damn bad you wouldnt fucking know. PSO2 story I couldnt get into at all and it just feels like a generic anime. PSU hid it better and the characters and plot were way better. Like you said, seeing tragic events happen but actually continuing the story to see it to the end and fix it up is rare.

fuck I miss PSO. I remember playing this on my DC. I have hard nostalgia for the Shenmue Passport music too, I spent ages just hooking up my DC to the internet because it was on the fucking INTERNET HOW COOL WAS THAT.

>the internet will never be cool and exciting and new again.

I remember being blown away by how good the graphics in Soul Calibur were. And how amazing MSR looked and how fun it was to play, and how the game read your clock so every race in a different country was at the correct time of day.

It was a shit game, but I spent over a thousand hours playing and met some really nice people in it. Don't have any screenshots though, I played on the PS2. sorry for the console limitations ;_;

>triple heavy
I don't think I ever got an actual confirmation for it but I could've sworn that heavy attacks hit less frequent as the first attack.

YUP! THERE we go! White Beast was all everyone was doing when I was playing for the most part unless you needed materials from a different planet/crafting board and didn't want to put up with buying.
Ahhss, sadly the PC version died after 2008, we outright finished MAG, had 4 months, and then closure out of nowhere. It was fucking sad. I knew the 360 version in the US went on for a few years more before getting shut down as well, but PC/PS2 got gimped so hard. It was one of the first games with a 'true' crossplay though, even if the 360 was locked in it's own little bubble, and I'm glad PSO2 continues that with PC, the Vita and now PS4.

I'm really glad to chat with someone else who's been able to remember all the names and the like for all this stuff, as sadly most of that's more a vivid dream with hazy areas then something I can directly call back without the screenshots for aid.

Still, I'll admit I liked how the game looked back on my Geforce 6800. Ran smooth as hell too.
>>
>>333926414

doesn't matter at all with enough hit, HHH is the way to go.
>>
>>333926414
They do. Accuracy rises as the combo continues, but unless you're having constant problems hitting triple heavy is often a good choice. Of course sometimes it's just asking for some small fry monster to slap you in the face too.

MSR basically taught me how to play driving games. I mean I'd played a shitton before it, but goddamn if that scoring system wasn't addictive as all fuck. The physics, graphics and music in that game were solid.

I never enjoyed the Project Gotham games that came after it though. I still think about Kudos driving sometimes.
>>
>>333926493
True but that was a good thing in its own right. It encouraged you to replay different missions or planets so you could find materials that were rare and sold them high because of their low quantity. Reading about PC/PS2 server news was so sad at the time, seeing screenshots with the population being 1 star or just a filled in star...Im sorry mang. PSU 360 did great up until 2011 or so when the updates started getting lazy and more players got tired of being so behind the japs. It was a good run but a hard end, but at least the 360 and JP servers both closed in september 2012.

I wouldnt live with myself if I forgot this shit. I had over 10000 hours combined on 360 and japanese server. PSU was my shit for years and helped me through hard times along with being a fun game on its own. The game wasnt a graphic showcase but it had a pretty distinct art style and each planet had its own theme which was cool. Moatoob was a rough deserty place with mines, deserts, abandoned bases, and a casino, perfect for rogues. Parum was high tech and artificial with just a few spots left of the nature. Neudaiz was a japanese inspired water planet with lots of temples, forests, and japanese styled buildings. Guardians colony made for a good command outpost and was futuristic yet had a homestyle feel to it, like a giant shopping mall along with a business section in the 5th floor.

>shenmue

I bought that game brand new as a young teen knowing very little about it save for some promotional material I saw in a magazine.

It blew my mind with its attention to detail, graphics and world. I remember exactly where I was when I beat it.

>at dad's for that weekend
>brought DC and Shenmue to finish it
>dad had strict 'lights out' curfew shit
>stay up late, had small tv in my room that had a headphone port
>remember watching that boat at the ending and being heartbroken that I'd finished the game and the adventure (for the time) was over

Fuck I think I spent my first hour playing just opening every fucking cupboard and drawer in the house. I found basically nothing but the fact that you COULD open all the drawers was fucking mind blowing.

finding the mirror in the house is something I'll never forget because it was so cool that it'd been there all the time and I had already ripped that room apart and there were still secrets.

also

>tfw britfag so I just finished Shemue, and booted up Shenmue II and carried over all my save data and inventory to the next game.

FUCKING GENIUS SEGA 10/10 can carry my sonic toys all the way to china.

PSZero is forever stuck in Offline or Local only ;w;
Zero was an weird one, given the PA's were RNG'ed onto a weapon, but I was honestly surprised for a DS game how well it played, looked, and connected.

tfw I was fucking crushed that Shenmue II was scrapped for Dreamcast in USA and only being released on the fucking Xbox.
To this day I still bear a grudge against Microsoft for that. I will never forgive them.
Years later I replayed Shenmue and imported the EU version, did a bunch of shit to convert my save and hardly played it.
>>
>>333911513
I never had a Dreamcast. I can't believe a DC game looked that good and ran at 60 fps.
>>
I only ever got to play this on the DS. And I really loved it. Is there any version I can pirate with either servers still up or private servers and active?

I saw someone mention Blue Burst earlier.
>>
>>333930247
I think you can set up tethella servers for single player somehow.
Should be easy.

Or you could emulate the gc version with dolphin.
>>
>>333930247
There's Phantasy Star Portable 1 and 2 for the PSP. If you like the DS version then you're going to love the PSP ones. Online being active is another issue.

ephinea, shithack and ultima
>>
>>333930247

PSO ultima, eden and ephinea are all private servers you can just download and play. Ultima has lots of players and custom stuff, Ephinea is a vanilla low rate and Eden is a "high rate" with less players but it has been around for years.

>>333930558

by low rate I mean base exp and drop rates like in the normal game, for the high rate it is I believe x8 normal exp that lowers to x2 as you near level 200 and a higher drop rate.

each of those sites has their own client for download, the thing should be under 500mb so it isn't exactly a heavy download. You should just check out those servers and find out which one you want to play on.

I haven't used it yet because of having a DS Lite and router security issues, but can't you guys just play PS Zero online with that new community server? I play it with my brother when he's not working too much.
