Earthbound gameplay is really arcadic. It feels like it was balance by the same people who balanced Dragon Warrior II which is not really a good thing. The menu system is unbareable and some of the enemies are just flat out annoying.

Dragon Quest is my favorite game series. Earthbound is very similar to the combat and mechanics of Dragon Quest II, with a modern setting.

So pretty much its a friendship adventure simulator for NEETs who never had friends or left the house. That explains why it's so praised here.
It finds a way to reach players without relying heavily on cutscenes or narrative.
If the indie scene has taught you anything in the last several years, OP, is that people will forgive a game with so-so gameplay if the writing is charming, the music is good, and the atmosphere is pleasant.
