I suppose just being concerned about the long-term improvement, and being regularly aware and thinking about ways to improve is good to do, as there surely is much more to be said on this. A lot of it does come down to genetics though, so make sure to use in-vitro fertilization with sperm/egg from two high quality individuals so your children don't have to be failures.
