It was a lot of fun. When I was unemployed for a long time in 2009, I started obsessively playing browser games like KoL, Billy vs Snakeman, Human Age, and that zombie one where you can be killed while you're logged off.

Like most game developers, the Video Game Hot Dog guys who made it seem to not really like actual video games very much. I gave up listening to their podcast when every damn cast devolved into them gushing about room escape bullshit and a million reasons why they didn't actually play the game they had assigned themselves to play that week. Of course, there was also the all girl Video Game Taco cast they did that was simultaneously praised as the greatest thing in progressive gaming ever and abso-fucking-lutely unlistenable to, because those two things always go together.

I got stuck trying to navigate the El Vibrato and stopped playing. Was desperate to get pic related, but it got way too confusing and time consuming to get everything that you needed to survive that hell-hole.

I played this when they were still adding onto the world, the true investment currency was hell ramen, and BoozerBear exploited a bug to be the first player with billions of meat before they closed the loophole.
Then there was no more content. Ascension was just a pipedream at the time, so I quit. I enjoyed it and would enjoy playing it again, but I can't be assed to have it piecemealed out like it is. A shame.

A lot of early-game confusion, but a hell of a lot of fun if you stick with it.
Disco Bandit's probably the most noob-friendly class, but you should try them all eventually.
Oh, and go into options, enable the fullness counter, display the size and quality of food and booze, and sort your inventory by power.

Look up what quests you're doing so you don't get stuck. The Wiki has full guides. Don't be afraid to use them because the game can be obtuse at times.
You only get so many adventures per day, so using them efficiently is key. You can get more adventures by eating food and drinking booze. Food caps out at 15 fullness, but booze has no cap. However, if you drink more than 15 points of alcohol, you become too drunk to adventure and therefore can't keep adventuring for the rest of the day.
You get 40 adventures every day.

Have you ever played any web game with a per-day turn limit? KoL might not be the oldest, but it's definitely the longest running and definitely the greatest. Expect to consult the wiki for some of the more obscure bullshit, but they have been working hard renovating the main quests to be better streamlined and more intuitive. Also expected great humor.
