Is there any reason to use a Steam controller to play a game you can already play with a controller?

I got one recently and I'm starting to get used to it, but I still don't see why I'd use it over a 360 controller for Dark Souls or Dragon's Dogma or something.

Why would you use a 360 controller an not an 8 dollar dualshock clone

Why did you get it in the first place, if you didn't believe you'd use it over a 360 controller?
>>
They're all pretty interchangeable, the only difference I can tell is personal preference for one brand or another.
>>
>>333833394
Maybe "still" was the wrong word. I guess what I meant is I got it because I was curious and some of what it can do is pretty cool, but immediately hated using it for anything like a third-person action game. I kept using it for a while and it's a lot better now, but I'm still not sure it's "good" for that, at least for me.

Nah not really, I've had the 360 controller in the past, wasn't bad. But has nothing on the accuracy of the track pads.

>hated it for third person action
I've used it on Dark Souls and Front Mission, plays better then the DS3/DS4/360/XBO controllers was remotely capable of.
>>
>>333833647
I actually think the trackpads are pretty cool and I'm getting used to using the right one for a third-person camera.

What I don't like are the clicky RB/LB shoulder buttons and the small, out-of-the-way face buttons. For playing Dark Souls, I mapped the left back paddle to B so I can sprint while turning the camera, and that's pretty cool. But I feel like I have to stretch uncomfortably far to hit Y, X, and A when I need to.

Because the touch pads have an inherent reflex bonus over analog sticks. Calibrated correctly, it can be just as good if not better than mouse.

Obviously for single player games it doesn't matter all that much since they're usually based around the buttons, but it opens up new possibilities for RTS, MMO or shooter games.
>>
>>333833647
no way it would be as accurate in twitchy fps games when compared to a gaming mouse though surely.
>>
>>333833857
Still better than a standard controller.
>>
>>333833857
Mouse > track pad > sticks, basically. I wouldn't use it for an FPS if I was sitting at a desk with a KB/M, but it's good for playing on the couch casually.
>>
>>333833973
i already have a really good mouse and keyboard so a trackpad would be useless for me.

Also happy with my xbone controller
>>
I was using the controller at a friend's house and it felt incredibly plastic-y. I guess it probably feels better with time but right off the bat it felt quite cheap compared to the 360 controller.
>>
>>333833097
what moron would buy a steam controller?
>made third world
>made cheaply
>break after 2 months

Here I'll share my DaS layout. Give it a try if you like.

And the face buttons feel rather odd at first, Mostly because we are all used to them being much closer to the inside. But I've grown used to them already.

>>333833857
>compared to a mouse
I've never said it was, However I've used it in several FPS co-op and single player games and I'll continue to do so. As it's far more enjoyable experience to me for those instances with a controller. and the accuracy of the track pad is several fold over any analog stick.

If you want to play competitive anything I highly suggest you stick with the proper hardware. Like m/kb, flight stick, wheel, arcade stick.

I have a XBO controller as well, And it's pretty garbage for playing KF2, while I'm actually able to enjoy KF2 and have no problem playing the game with the SC.
>>
>>333833097
hey look guys! valve put a touch pad on a controller. literally like 50 year old tech
>>
>>333834175
Do you have the d-pad item select set to require click or not?

I've found that it's pretty great to have it not require click, put haptics on high so you know when you've hit it, and then set it to radial without overlap. It's pretty nice.

I'm tempted to use your binding for attacks (trigger/paddle instead of bumper/trigger) except I'm really liking having B mapped to the back left paddle so I can sprint and turn the camera at the same time. Maybe I'll try having it different on the right and left or something.
>>
>>333834175
Is that how the controller can be configured? Does the controller work with that config outside of steam? looks pretty swell.
>>
>>333833097
Well, it can do it and changing controllers is annoying.

>Click or not
I have it set to click, but only for games like DaS, some games I'll have it set to touch only. (Metal Slug 3) I'm a casual in that so I just play it for fun.

>tempted controls
You could always do a second binding for sprint to the down click on the analog stick. Simply use that only for sprint and keep the dodge bound to B as well. That way you can keep your rolls and have sprint easy to use.

>>333834556
Yea that's the configuration menu, You can bind each button to a key, controller, or mouse option of your choice.

There are additional buttons on the controller that I haven't found much use for, like each trigger has two functions. Pulling it in and once it is in a second function that clicks.

Same thing can be applied to the analog stick based on range. Normal mode and the outside edge can add an extra button, so like shift, to cause you to sprint in some games. It's a little odd so I don't use that.

Pretty much the same for the touch pads.

Yes, you need to keep big picture up though in the background sadly right now.

But you can use the controller for desktop mode and it's can be changed as well. Image is what I'm using right now.

You can share setups online, though the system for it isn't very good yet.

You can also use the controller to do text, I use it every now and again. You can have it display on the desktop, but I don't think it likes multimonitor systems for that.
>>
>>333834752
I like the idea of a binding that doesn't make me use the clicky bumpers. They don't feel good to use and they're part of the reason hitting the face buttons feels like such a stretch.
>>
>>333834864
>Yes, you need to keep big picture up though in the background sadly right now.
I through the configuration would get saved inside the controller so that it sends the proper keys/buttons/ whatever through xinput/dinput/sdl. Shit, I don't wanna steam to know my porn platformers.
>>
>>333833824
>it can be just as good if not better than mouse.
yeah, no. Way better than an analog, but not a mouse.
>>
>>333835241
>big picture mode
Nevermind, looks like you just need steam opened to work(don't need big picture, that is only for the games). As soon as you close steam though the controller stops.

Not sure if you can register the same controller to multiple accounts. But you could always do that.
>>
Protip: Set the left pad to the cross-hatch setting if you want to use it as a d-pad, it works wonders for me.
>>
>>333833097
wow! steam invented an xbox controller!
How innovative! much wow! no buy...
>>
>>333833097
Yeah if developers would actually support it

Reinstalled MGSV just to find out konami's official profile is just a mouse-like joystick instead of fixing the game to use the mouse.
>>
>>333835545
>trusting a dev to fix anything
They gave it free customization for a reason.

All the proof I need to know that people who shit on the steam controller are underage memers
