Don't tell me you HAVEN'T played Dwarf Fortress?
http://www.bay12forums.com/smf/index.php?topic=126076
Don't be put off by the graphics and the interface, this is one of the most detailed games there is, with too many mechanics to count
It even inspired a more accessible, watered down version, called Minecraft
With action like this, I have no idea why this game isn't more popular
>>333821575
intense.
>>333821382
>It even inspired a more accessible, watered down version, called Minecraft
I've played a lot of Dwarf Fortress, thank you
Stage one
>>333821382
Ill settle with Rimworld anon, just about the right amount of autistic detail, but with the potential of getting really good. Combat is also p.good
Stage two. Nearly ended with me flooding everything
>>333821382
it inspired minecraft but aside from notch's orginial design ideas they're hardly a like
>>333821382
source on the image op?
How long until Toady dies?
Stage three.
>>333823556
He'll never die.
He's currently writing himself into the DF code. He'll live forever in the game.
>>333821382
Good game
>>333823556
Someone autistic enough to make Dwarf Fortress can't die anon.
....does dorf fort actually have graphics now?
>>333823615
>>333823593
>All the kings who ever quested for immortality will be outdone by an autist making a game about dorfs dying horrible deaths
The Epic of Toadymesh
>>333823619
It will never have them anon.
This level of autism can't be contained with anything but ASCII shit and a godawfull UI.
>>333823619
That's a third party visualizer.
>>333823476
That's true, the world generation and mining is there but DF is more of a management game, with Minecraft having it's own combination of mechanics
Needs more curazy fighting options like being able to specifically cut off hands/feet to create stumps and being able to punch/kick people with said stumps.
>Guy slashes off your hand
>"DO I LOOK LIKE A GIVE A FUCK"
>Punch them right in the gut with the bloody stump
>>333823513
Found it on google images, sorry
>>333823862
It can get pretty crazy already, but that would be cool
>finally manage to get into the game
>it's boring
fuck
I just wish that the game by default came with dwarf therapist. Otherwise it's just a huge pain in the butt to change everyone's job list when a migration wave comes and most of the time I can't even bother to change it so I end up with 100 idlers and a lot of dwarfs interfering with my other work. Haven't played since the new trees came out though, is climbing in fortress mode?
>>333823778
>godawful UI
What's so bad about it? It's so much faster to just press b > b Than to click, scroll, and then select a bed.
>>333823970
It needs a more in-depth physics system where size/speed etc matter more.
A bronze colossus should be strong enough to kick you 40 levels into the air at least. A fucking killer whale can easily send a sealion airborne several dozen feet into the air.
>>333823569
beautiful, I like building things above ground so I can see it in 3d world view whatever
>>333824067
I said it was godawful, I didn't say it wasn't more efficient.
>>333824207
But it's not even bad
"game"
/thread
>>333824054
>is climbing in fortress mode?
Yes. Dorfs can use ladders now to access fruit in trees. I thought invaders have been able to climb for a while now like jumping and grasping things.
>>333823346
I was joking family
>>333824252
But that's a lie anon, it looks fucking awful, and a jumble of text with no real spacing between it bordered with ASCII shit.
Its the most ugly UI I ever saw, and the most basic shit about a UI is that it shouldn't look like rat vomit since you have no excuse to make it look atleast half decent if you can make it functional as fuck.
>>333824284
>/thread-ing yourself
And why isn't it a game then? it's not a visual novel
>>333824473
Actually the most "basic shit" about a UI is that it works properly.
And it does.
>no Linux port until Toady dies
>>333824539
Business as usual then?
>>333824558
no linux port until the fucking sun dies
toady lives on in his code

>>333824491
It strips you off graphics , mechanics and gameplay that is a joke to not have with the tech available.
Now proceed to tell me that its not stupid and lazy and that it was supposed to be like that. Really the game is so fucking boring and limitting that it made me appreciate freagin TES Arena more. Thats the only thing that came out of it
>>333824473
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User_interface
>The goal of this interaction is to allow effective operation and control of the machine from the human end, whilst the machine simultaneously feeds back information that aids the operators' decision-making process.
The fact that it isn't pretty doesn't make it NOT a UI. In fact, it's the most basic implementation of a UI you're going to find in applications people still run nowadays.
>>333824557
And like I said, it does work, but its also basic shit that if you can make a UI work well, you can make one look good too.
And its stupid not to when you know the creator can do a better UI, but just doesn't.
>>333824723
its a game, deal with it
>>333824723
>Being this salty over being a casual
calm down buddy
>>333824735
Eh, I guess I can condede you that point. Although if Toady should do something it's allow for multi-core support.
Yes, it'd require to make the egnine all over again, but DF runs like absolute ass
OC a kind anon made based on one of my inscriptions years ago.
>>333824723
It has mechanics and gameplay in spades, maybe you don't enjoy it but you can't deny that DF is a game because you don't find it fun
>>333824735
He doesn't have to because the people who play Dwarf Fortress don't have a problem with the UI. Those that do are too busy bitching about it and therefore not playing the game.
Want a better UI? Make it yourself (UI has been completely externalized, google it and have fun.) or play it on fucking iOS because someone already made a casual proof interface for you.
>>333824723
>I AM A CASUAL AND I'LL HAVE ALL OF YOU KNOW IT
Tried playing it back in 2007 or so when there were countless threads about it. My autism level just isn't high enough to grasp that shit.
I wish i could be smart enough to play this game
>>333824429
You're joking, but you're correct

>>333824539
2CARP!!2CARP!!!!!!!
What is your naming system for dwarves? The method I use is going through the first couple pages of /v and any fictional characters or real people i see in any picture that's not already in the fort.
>>333824941
It's pretty simple to me. Controlling a bunch of dorfs with 1860s-ish level technology. What do people need? Food, drinks, shelter. So do that.
The next time I'll play this game again will be when Toady adds hold position and retreat commands for squads.
>>333824539
which visualizer is the best?
https://youtu.be/rvJsG4F2Img
>>333821382
>with too many mechanics to count
Which is exactly what is holding me back from trying it. My best years where I could invest full autism into a game are over, nowadays I just want something to relax with.
>>333825018
I name dwarvesafter my friends and tell them how their named dwarves are progressing
I wanna be good at it, but I'm completely new to the game.
>>333825259
I name my dwarves after girls who rejected me. Unfortunately this way I'm limited to a population of 170plus 10 kids.
>>333825465
if you have any questions ask away here/in the /vg/ thread (literally the only general that isn't saltier than the dead sea)always check the wiki first though
>>333824723
>It strips you off mechanics and gameplay
But that's completely fucking wrong. It makes me sincerely question whether or not you've even installed the game.
Also you type like an inbred mouthbreathing homosexual.
Get out.
>tfw my attention span is too low for dorf fortress
It looks so fun, though.
>>333824836
One should not have to modify the game for it to be enjoyable at its basic state, just because the playerbase got used to a shit feature does not mean it should not be improved.
>>333825612
so, say I just started a fort, how much food is low enough that I should be worried about starving? like, how much per season does a dwarf eat and drink?
if I have a bunch of food, will it rot or something?
also, how do I keep my seed count high?
>>333824539
RISE MY MINIONS
>>333825538
kek
>>333825961
They like to drink twice as often as they eat, and they probably eat something like twice a month. So 48 food and 96 alcohol per 1 dwarf per year.
But you really should get up your still and meat industry during the first year, always.
>>333826628
thanks
>>333821382
>with too many mechanics to count
that's not a perk to me
>>333825961
my strategy is always to get farming up to a point respectable enough that supplies are always growing, not decreasing.
better to throw/trade away excess than not having enough.
but like >>33826628 said, it's wise to get food & drinks setup as fast as you can to not worry about it and move on to other things.
the faster it's setup the more excess you're gonna have which is never bad
>>333826874
>accidentally deleting a 3 somehow while typing
city of me, was referring to >>333826628
>>333826628
Okay, ultra noob here, what are they actually using when I make beer? Water and the plants I gathered?
How do I build up my brewing?
>>333826628
but that's 24 food and 48 food you fucking mong
>>333827032
They use barrels, a still, and a brewable plant. Water isn't necessarily required (I've gotten by in desert forts using only traded alcohol and traded plants to make beer, but it's extraordinarily difficult).
If you want more brewing, build more Stills (b, w, l) and give more dwarves the Brewing job (v over the desired dwarf, p, l, then select farming/related and scroll down). Then your dwarves will find a barrel and a brewable plant, and turn whatever is available into beer/wine/mead/ale.
>>333823996
You should pick a better place for your fortress.
>>333827032
They only use plants.
Build up your brewing? Do you mean how you increase production? More stills and more brewers.
>Comparing DF to Minecraft
I want this meme to stop, the games have fucking nothing in common.
>>333825926
Take the time to learn like everyone else. Git gud or get out friendo
>>333827328
Ill get out then.
A game ya have to tell yourself losing is fun at, and where the creator doesn't bother to fix something inherently bad about it and instead focuses on more autistic details is no game I wish to be involved with.
>>333827032
You either have plants or grow them yourself.
Then you have barrels/pots or make them yourself.
Using a container and a brewable plant will make the type of drink that plant makes (every plant makes a different type of drink), no water required.
Most people use Plump Helmets in their farms for this.
If you make a drink out of a plant it'll give more of it's corresponding seeds, resulting in you being able to grow more of them.
>>333827562
>Notch said "it inspired the game"
>So there's a lot in common here!
>>333827618
don't worry, the game's community doesn't wish to be involved with your type either
don't let the door hit you on the way out.
>>333827698
>Implying I didn't mark the door as forbidden
>Implying he's going anywhere
>>333827618
It's like you're wilfully being a massive retard.
You aren't the sole judge of the game's quality m8. What you see as flaws are actually what make the game good. Losing is fun in DF because lulzy random shit can and will happen.
Have fun needing to be spoonfed by every game you play.
>>333827830
had a good kek there anon
>>333827697
As an actual player of DF I'd prefer not to be associated with jewcraft, but I think OP saying that minecraft is a very, very watered down version is correct
both games involve medieval fantasy worlds where the objective is creating structures, crafting, and survival, there is no clear endgame, there's a world underneath the main world in both games possessing demonic horrors, there's different types of rock you can go through and specific layers of rock will have correct geological names, etc
minecraft and dwarf fortress do have some similarities, although there are obvious big differences as well
>>333828003
