I do. He's not my customizable self-insert, he's Link. Being able to choose the name doesn't change that. You could add the ability to change Mario's name in Mario games (or Samus, Fox, etc) and it would have the exact same effect.

You can't in WW though. You can make him wear his starting outfit in NG+ but that's it.

Back in the 8 bit days someone decided that people should be able to rename their character so they could feel like a part of the game. After all, swapping out a name in a dialog box is easy enough. Of course this is stupid now that games have proper voice acting. The worst example is Final Fantasy X and it's sequel where Tidus is never referred to by name in any dialog because SquareEnix thought is was more important for you to choose his name.

Those rare games where they bother recording a ton of different names for you are pretty good. I think that was one of the few pieces of effort Fallout 4 had put into it.
