I just never understood why they weren't used in tandem. Before going into Stardust Crusaders, I thought Jotaro was going to be the first of a new generation who merged the two together. The Hamon is outdated and incredibly impractical compared to Stands. DIO's fight is a good example of that.
Instead of relying on a very difficult to master martial art, one that you need to train for years unless you're a special snowflake with natural affinity (and even then Joseph needed an impossibly hard training), a Stand gave a regular person a way to defeat an immortal vampire.

Part 2 was amazing because Joseph had to pull some amazing prep time bullshit out of his ass to make his relatively pathetic power match up to OP gods walking on earth. He always started at a huge disadvantage having just hamon but worked his way up using ingenuity and skill. Stands just make everyone seem too evenly powered.
