I would have the same problem if you could play as male Lightning.

I don't understand why gender is a thing people need to represent themselves. One reason I play vidya is to be other people. To be a teenage boy, to be an older experienced man, to be a girl. All those things I welcome and is interesting to me. That applies to different races as well. It really does not matter to me as long as its not to just appeal to an audience or meet a quota.

I like being able to play as a girl so the game is a further step in wish fulfillment

There's also the fact that he's barely a character in terms of personality or anything. And because his gender was only relevant once (being engaged to Ruto) it's not a huge deal

I would play a game with either as the lead as long as the game was good. Metroid would have been fun if the main character was male or female.

I dig options too though. I'd play a Zelda as femlink or linkle just for the novelty of it.

I don't like playing as females, but if I do play as a girl, I prefer her to be a complete character and not some empty identity with a switch for both genders. Which is why I never bothered to play as female in Fallout 1/2 and didn't mind Terra in FF6.

If I get to pick, I always without fail pick the male version.
If not, I adapt and deal with the situation and enjoy the game regardless.

Link is barely a character as it is.
I see no problem with making Link's gender a choice or even replacing him outright.
I can imagine replacing him might turn a lot of Zelda fans off though.

I played FF8, 9, 10, 10-2, 12, and 13 and I have to say that 13 is definitely one of the better Final Fantasies. The battle system is actually fun, fast paced, and difficult unlike the previous generations. Status effects and buffs actually play an extremely crucial role in battle which is something that the previous Final Fantasies (except 12) completely failed to do (grind and overpower characters and attack to win). The characters in 13 all actually interact with each other meaningfully unlike 8, 10-2, and 12. The game scored lower than the other numbered Final Fantasies but it still sold the 4th highest.

The sex that a person can play really does matter. Dual sex games usually have a "create your own story" kind of gameplay which allows you to make decisions effecting your gameplay. The narrative suffers due to this freedom and the story is poorer. Basically, a man's story is different from a woman's. A man's relationship with his family and friends is different from a woman's relationship.

Lightning's design definitely pandered to an otaku's idea of a strong female protagonist but as a result of this, the game was received poorer than it should have been. People still call her a female Cloud. I could just as well say that Squall and Tidus is just another moody Cloud but no one seems to think this way. People thought that 13 gave too much spotlight to Lightning despite the fact that her screentime was spread out with the other 5 main characters. FF8, 9, and 10 exclusively gave most of the screentime to the protagonist.

I honestly think that a male protagonist is received better than a female protagonist. In anything that's not pornography, men sell better than women. Just think of some of the best selling fictional novels and movies. Who is the main character?

Now this doesn't mean that I absolutely refuse to play games if female is the only option. I quite like Beyond Good and Evil and No One Lives Forever, but these are the rare exceptions. Most often these games just go instantly on my ignore list.

Is there really more to know about Cloud? I think I understand him well enough. I've never said that FF7 was bad. It's the most successful Final Fantasy and rightly so, the story seems amazing. I'm just saying that Lightning is nothing like Cloud. Squall more like Cloud than Lightning.
