If there's jump/roll AND block, cross to jump/roll and block to L1. If there's only one of those, cross.

Best objective control scheme for action/platformers coming through

X - Jump
Square - Strong Atk
Circle - Weak Atk
Triangle - Open a context sensitive menu above you where you have assigned items/weapons mapped to directional buttons

L1 - Block, can move slowly while blocking. Double tap direction while blocking to dodgeroll
R1 - Lock on
R2/L2 - Switch lockon target

To be fair the shapes on the playstation controllers do have symbolic meanings

PS2 and most original PS3 controllers have pressure-sensitive buttons. not just "half pressed / pressed", but linear pressure detection. the last time I saw it being used effectively was MGS4. It only worked with the original controller shipped with the console though.
