The only game I've played with gyro that felt great was Splatoon.
Killzone: Mercenary got it right. It was a combination of sticks for large sweeping movements and gyro for fine aiming.

It only works in conjunction with twin sticks, like in the zelda remakes where you can move with the sticks but fine tune with gyro, and splatoon.
But in the end it's still not as good as mouse aim that's been around forever.
