It has some flaws but for a AAA game it was good. Most people want to shit on it but if you play all three together you really feel like shit when Max is drinking and mixing pain meds hard.

The biggest problems I had with the game were unskippable cutscenes (can turn you off from replaying the game) and the rather impersonal nature of the story - MP3 was pretty much a "job goes wrong" story, while in the other games Max always had a personal stake.

Anyway, MP1 had more humor because the budget was so low you couldn't really take the game seriously, they had employees playing the characters for fuck's sake. With MP2 they had larger budget, so they decided to make the game a bit more serious.

First two games were cheap noir stories, while third one is a cheap action. I don't have a problem with Max as a character, I have a problem with overall story, with the lack of small details like enemy dialogs, a tv series, or a little sillyness here and there.
It's like comparing "Die Hard" to "A Good Day to Die Hard". In first one McClane is a character, in last one he's an action hero.
