You're absolutely right about the difficulty in the later levers, but I wouldn't say it's artificial. If you're going through at the game at full speed, you're most likely going to get fucked over, but if you take your time, you should be fine.
The final bramble race level and the K. Rool battles are loads of shit though, you're right about that.
Also, the soundtrack is amazing, even ignoring overrated tracks like Stickerbrush Symphony.

Sonic 2 is literally the most easy, entry level, normalfag game of the classic series. It lacks the content, polish, challenge, and sense of reward that 3K has. Co-op also sucks dick compared to 3K. Level design is way more straightforward, and thus lacking in replayability, compared to CD and 3K.

Well, on one hand, SMW is one of the best games of all time.
On the other, there has literally never been a good Sonic game.
Sonic games were... Simple. Not being derogatory, just stating an opinion. Limited power ups, limited diversity in game play, and overall they were all kind of short.
Sweet but short.
They made for that with having replay-ability for speed-running with your friends and a kind of stylized charm unique to the early Sonic franchise.
Mario, on the other hand, has frequently been the ideal platformer made manifest. A puzzle you figure out in real time and don't even know you're solving. A fight you win more by virtue of having fun and trying new things rather than by blink-and-you'll-miss-it reflexes and insanely frustrating trial and error (barring few exceptions). Where Sonic succeeds in simplicity and stylized charm Mario makes up for in weird little intricacies and easy to miss brilliance.
