Assault is my favorite game in the series, and I'm sad that we aren't getting a sequel to it and instead are just getting a re-imagining of 64, a game that already got remade on 3DS....

That said, Zero looks pretty fun gameplay wise regardless. Though I genuinely miss Assault. I even liked its ground combat, which would've been awesome to have a sequel with improved gameplay to iron out its problems there. I liked strafing to a door, throwing a grenade in a room, and then strafing away while the door closes, blowing up enemies inside. Was great fun.

Why not test it and see? Dolphin is a very VERY good emulator these days, maybe its fixed now? Assault is a VERY short game, so its not as if you'd lose much by testing it to see. Try emulating it anyways.

They can work together if they need to so I'd say its not out of the question. But Star Fox games aren't really about the story, and such a change I suspect would be unlikely unless they pulled another Command, which could have disasterous results.

It's a very flawed game with a few good parts. 60% of it is painful to play if I had to put a number on it. The formula might work better with better control schemes and more polish.

Granted I never got to play the multiplayer so I don't know if that makes it more worthwhile.

Anything involving the land was a little rough around the edges, even with dual stick activated. Sensitivity is all over the place and moving the tank the way I want is a crapshoot. I actually perform better with single stick mode which is just weird.

The objectives during the land missions are just variations of blow up X number of objects. Now blow up object Y. Then do Z. It's grating after awhile when you start to notice it.

The rail missions are OK, probably the best part overall, but even they aren't without fault. Overall sound design is fucked. There's no feedback when you get hit. Everyone sounds like they're talking in a cave, even when they're standing right next to you in the briefing scenes.

Is it the worst game in the series? Not even close. Is it lackluster? Yeah. That doesn't mean it's not worth playing but it could be done much better these days.

General areas to improve:
>the fucking sound effects
>on foot control
>tank control
>on foot weapons, make them more interesting
>on foot mission objectives, make them more interesting
>improved mook enemies for the ground missions, make them more distinct from each other and have each variation pose a different kind of threat
>more rail missions
>throw in the walker and some sort of aquatic transformation for the arwing

Honestly I thought the tank was fucking awesome. I loved how the roll felt. Only complaint I had was how slow the laser was compared to Star Fox 64, but it seems to have more oomph behind it this time around, making up for that. I suppose I don't mind the objectives because I'm more of a "blow up X now blow up Y" kind of guy. I love mowing down shit.

I did notice that my friends had more trouble with the tank than I did. A lot of people seemed to complain that it was difficult to control. Me though, whenever I got into one of those fuckers I blew my friends out of the sky with ease. It felt very natural.

But then maybe that's also because I used it a lot during multiplayer, I don't know.

It's because you want to change direction with the tank using the left stick but that's not what it does when you're using dual stick. You adjust which way you're pointing with the right stick, which is also what you're aiming with. It's doesn't make a ton of sense since you could just have the left stick be Up, Down, Turn Left, Turn Right. That's why single stick is easier to work with because that's essentially how it works, granted you have to stop and hold a button to aim up.

They could have easily added some variation in the objectives. Even if they were just cliche objectives you've seen a thousand times before, it would help break up the action.

Like I said, it ain't shit, but it deserves some of the shit it gets.

Ah yes, well I use single stick control as well. To be honest I never chose dual stick because I wasn't used to it. Everyone else had played FPSes heavily back in the day but me. Even though I had a PS2 and all that, I wasn't interested in them, so I got quite used to single stick controls.

This is the one thing about Zero I'm disappointed with, instead of fixing the problems of Assault and Command it just ditched everything they did and went back to 64.

I really hope there's a sequel and that it brings back better designed on-foot parts and RTS elements.

I would have actually liked to see them go back to basics and build from there, but Zero seems more like a new direction entirely, Frankensteined together from parts of every game in the series. The Walker parts remind me of the on foot sections of Assault, there's starship core battles ripped straight out of SF2 and

I like the look of it but I'm unsure if I'll be able to overcome the controls. We'll see.

Assault had its issues, but it did feel like the path forward for the series...Command kinda shat on that though, and I do think Zero looks great, but i'm with you. Assault is a flawed game that I think gets too much flak.
