It's a raising simulator in which you pick an idol or group of idols, and take them through training to raise their popularity and stuff.
They're popular because cute girls doing idol things.
I bought the second one, and found it really boring. Although I hear the XBox original had better fleshed out stories, since it focused on one girl, instead of trying to squeeze 3+ girls into a story.

2 has ryuugu as a rival unit, those four idols aren't playable.
One For All has all 13 available and no time limit so it's more casual.
