>start RPG
>"choose your class"
Character Creation in RPG's is great. I always spend like 45 minutes to a hour on it. The more detailed the descriptions for classes, the better.
>Choose your name
>Allocate your skill points
>Write up your backstory

Magic user. Every time. Can't go wrong.

What happens when the magic system is shit?
>Start MMORPG
>Choose your race, class and name
>start NW2
>tons of classes
>take like an hour before I've chosen
Too bad the game was shit

Stop playing the game, do a 360 and moonwalk the fuck away.
>game lets you level all classes and stats if you so wish meaning you dont really have to pick

Real talk: allowing the player to create their character before the game is just bad design. By definition the player is the worst he'll be at the game at that point and character creation is probably the most important part of an RPG.
>oh hey let's play some divinity original sin
>you have to design two characters
>shitloads of classes, attributes, talents, etc.
>everything is fully customizable
welp there goes my day
>challenge class that is intentionally worse than the others
Yeah you already know I'll pick this
Oblivion averts this pretty well. You get to have a taste of archery, magic and melee before you create your class.

Not really. Unless you're a minmaxing faggot in which case your first playthrough will either consist of consulting lots of guides or be a failure in that regard.
>>333594167
No but you're building a base for how you want to raise your character, so I wouldn't say it's bad game design just because you can customize your characters starting stats. That just sounds silly.
>choose your chin depth
>choose your iris size
>choose your eyebrow height
>>333594362
>Face customization
>nose customization
>14 sliders
>>333594362
I only barely touch those so I'm not completely default, but its way too much work to mess too much with that shit without looking like a memecuck
I always replay an RPG that allows you to create a character 3 time in this order.
>sensible, good, dex build, female
>reckless, bad, mag buld, black male
>any, neutral, str build, mess about weird look any gender
My black character can be substituted for any weird race/colour but it usually looks like Dennis Rodman.

>elderscroll game
>choose your class
Thief
>say no more fâmïĺý, every class it is
>>333594453
You must have a lot of time on your hands to play all RPG games 3 times
>>333594332
> not being minmaxing faggot in RPGs
>>333594294
>oblivion
>choose your class, ie favorite skills
>fantastic, now never use these again except to very carefully level up or you end up an underpowered mess of useless non-combat skills
Did they even playtest that game?
>>333594572
I don't min/max as it makes the game more fun for me. It's also great kicking min/max assholes' faces in in PvP.
>>333594572
Again, which on your first playthrough (as the premise implied you being clueless when creating a character) either consists of consulting lots of guides (you're a faggot) or will be a failure in minmaxing.
Best character creator.

>Bethesda
>playtesting
>>333594528
Well I haven't played them all.
>>333594528
You must be a massive casual if you don't replay RPG games with lots of customization several times to experience all the varieties of gameplay it offers.
>>333594628
>want to play an agile class
>pickacrobatics
>Spend hours creating a character in an MMO
>Finally enter the game
>See another player that looks almost exactly like you in the starting area
>>333594692
>lists race as species such as dwarf / elf / gnome rather than actual race like white / black / yellow
>>333593746
>start RPG
>"Enter your name"
>>333594847
There is no race, Anon.
