Difficulty settings are weird in Stalker. The easier the difficulty, the less accurate weapons are and the less damage they do. Go into options, set it to Stalker difficulty. You'll get killed in 2/3 hits, but your bullets will fly true. Play it clever and the game is beatable.

It's to do with poor coding of the difficulties. Easier difficulties make guns less accurate and hit more softly, but that applies to ALL guns, not just ones enemies are holding.

The game was a fucking cakewalk once I got the VSS Vintorez (I had the real gun names mod, not sure what it was in the game.).
Once you get the hang of the bullet drop it feels like every shot is a slam dunk magnetized to the enemies face.

I assume you already got a scoped rifle, OP ? AK74 gets the job done, but at that point you should be carrying a NATO rifle already.
Also keep in mind that the STALKER games do not have hit-scan guns.

Play in the release order. Start with no mods - only latest patch, OR get the full "Starter Pack" first; these contain bug-fixers and light visual mods that can help performance as well.
Leave big overhauls for later playthrougs. Avoid the "Complete" -mods. Always play on MASTER difficulty for best realism and atmosphere, and disable crosshair.
Don't give up in the beginning! The starting gear sucks ass and first area can be a bit boring.

If you're in "underground with zombies", you should have a NATO gun. I recommend SG 550 (I think it's called "SGI" in the game?). I guess other NATO guns can work too?

Zombies just have different head hitboxes. It doesn't count as a headshot unless you actually hit where their brain should be. Aim for the top half of their head, but not TOO high otherwise it'll just hit their skull.

Mutants carry AR-15s and you can buy lots of ammo from the Barmen, I think I took like 600 rounds with me, was more than enough to clear Yantar from snorks and X-18 from zombies.
I also had a pump-action but I didn't really use it because of videogameshotgunitis.
