I ran a sunbro, got invaded 4 times and got summoned to help with bosses enough to get greater sun spear.
Chage your steam download location.
That should fix the issue.
You will see messages but still very rarely will you get invaded or summon.

The online aspect of the game goes far beyond coop playing, thoufh coop is hella fun. I usually beat every boss solo on my first run but coop is an intended feature and boss health adapts to more players.
