The game is purely videos. If your laptop is capable of displaying 720p video without issues (and it would be hard to find any laptop that won't) it should be fine.

I'm at a part at the start of act 4 where the path branches three ways, but no decisions I make in the entire previous act can land me on two of those paths. It's insane.

Make sure you play it blind! School Days is quite possibly the best VN to play without a guide. Then on your second playthrough get onto the path you didn't reach the first time in episode 2 and play it blind from there. Rinse and repeat, then get whatever additional endings you wanted to check out.

Shiny Days is definitely a sequel of Summer Radish though. It follows directly from the harem route as half of the cast are children of Shun.

Don't cheap out. I forgot how much dick PCs before SSD/Intel core series sucked. I grabbed a tablet with 1 GB RAM and things take forever to load.
Get an used laptop with an intel core processor, 8 GB RAM and an SSD (or replace HDD with one).
Also, W10 barely broke any compatibility with games, VNs included.
