if obsolescence if your concern, 3U and Freedom Unite still hold up quite well in terms of unique content. 3U has underwater battles, and FU is pretty fucking hardcore in terms of how eager the game is to kill you.
Not entirely. In the case of 4U, it has all the weapons of the previous mainline games, but it's lacking quite a few monsters, especially from the 3rd generation. While it has new mechanics like vertical terrain combat and mounting, it is also missing the underwater battles that 3 had.
However, its roster is huge even without the missing monsters and few people miss swimming. It's your best bet if you want to get into the series.

They really gotta fix underwater combat before they try it again.
On a 3ds it was clunky as fuck due to just pure shit camera controls, but on the WiiU it wasn't that bad.
Plus weapons need more mobility options underwater.I honestly was expecting an arena based Ceadeus fight in 4u or generations where you use the jumping and shit to hop around platforms.
The latest game will usually have the most weapon types to play with, at least those featured in the mainline games.
The monster line up is different for every game, but Freedom Unite, 3U, and 4U each have enough distinct differences to warrant playing both of them. The latter especially reuses a tot of monsters from the first generation, and features the Wycoon who can trade you parts of many different monsters who are absent so you can still craft their equipment.
While I can't say much about its monster variety, MHX/Generations has Hunter Arts and Styles, some over-the-top stuff which some think may or may not return in the next lot of games.

Up until Freedom Unite updates to the series were pretty much that. Since mh3Tri they started changing things up with small differences in games of the same generation, and big overhauls usually taking place between generations.
