Musous naturally progress forward because Omegaforce can just add a new thing with each game. I think the only major steps back have been HW and DQH but that's more because of the series they were trying to turn into a musou more than anything.
If DW9 takes the new advancements like changing who you play as between your bodyguards but does away with the kill count to take over bases it should end up being pretty great.

Every single game in the main Dynasty Warriors series is the exact same story retold over and over again in a different way. So if you start with the earlier games and play through later ones you'll see the same characters and battles, but with new stuff added each time.
The other spinoff series handle stuff differently depending on the series.

I'm pretty sure you don't have to conquer them all. You just marry your waifu/husbando, and then after a certain amount of time, you have a child. And then a certain amount of time after that, they are old enough to fight alongside you. Definitely less than 16 years in game or whatever the fuck these children clearly are at least.

the credits roll after you conquered the last kingdom, like in 7Empires. You actually need to marry an officer and for a long time you can get a child during a time period. It can depend on how long the year passes. Because one turn is a month, meaning that there are twelve turns for an entire year. You usually get a notification when your child is born.
