I've tried twice now to get into it, but it's just not happening. I played on Death March the first time but stopped after finding Yen because I was just having an awful time.
Second time around I played on Normal and had to turn off the minimap to be able to get into it at all, but there's no way to navigate without it so I stopped shortly after the same point.

It's not awful, it's just not amazing either. There is not much weight behind the swings, auto-targeting, while vastly improved from the first game, is still dodgy at time, but most importantly, there isn't all that much to do in it. You have your quick and strong attack, parry, dodge and role options, plus one special few special attacks (I think three or four in the entirety), your bombs, crossbow, and several spells. Attacks can be chained into "combos's but all it really does is to make the combat the attacks do more damage and there is very little visceral feedback on what you do. It's a bit of a case "I'm pressing buttons in a very simple succession and Geralt does fancy stuff on the screen", but that is all.
The biggest problem however is that there simply isn't enough variety in enemy movesets for a 100+ hour game. Basically all enemies can be divided into roughly seven types, each type having almost universally the same movesets.
Again: the system would be entirely fine (fine - not great) for a 20-30 hour game, but by the end of this 100+ hour opus, your are going to find the combat very shallow and very repetitive.
It's still not awful enough to make you hate the game. It's just... easy to become routine, and it really lack some thrilling, unique-feeling monster or boss-fights.
Once you fought the gryphon, you know what all the battles with all large winged creatures (forktails, cockatrices etc...) will feel like.
Also, some bosses could be pretty easily broken by stun locks, but I think most of that was patched out.

The combat is pretty good once you feel the flow. not great, but absolutly good enough to be enjoyable and give you some pretty rewarding fights
for me its the side quests, the secondary characters, and the creature design. you actually care about these people and the way you interact with the world absolutely has a wild impact. its a great beautiful world to explore that constantly has me going "what the fuuuuuuckk" and wanting to talk to random NPC's. i actually know the plot of the game, and give a shit. it would not have been my pick for GOTY but i get why it won.

Basically Geralt controls poorly and the fighting is just dull. If you're focusing on using your sword, doing anything other than a few attacks dodging and repeating and occasionally using parry is pointless. The final boss was absolutely terrible. It was literally just wait for an opening and hit him once. You could hit him, use a spell, and hit him again as well but if you tried to hit him twice in a row without stunning him, he would just block everything. Made for an extremely boring experience.
Also, when you try to parry the game thinks that you're trying to go into witcher senses and "You can't do that right now" pops up on the screen. It's astounding to me that they never fixed that.

The game has some of the best writing and one of the most beautiful worlds you'll ever find in the RPG. I'm hesitant to say the story is good, because the main story-line is actually kinda weak towards the end (easily weakest of all the Witcher games), but the sub-stories and side quests are - in terms of writing - absolutely amazing. So is are the characters and the choice-and-consequence model, which really has to be the best or second best (on par, or right after Alpha Protocol) ever done.
That said, the quests are mechanically fairly simple, only rarely forcing you to do anything than follow the highlighted path, then make a dialog-based decision. So that is worth keeping in mind.
As for the world: it's just stunningly beautiful. And I'm not talking necessarily about the graphics: I'm talking the sheer amount of detail, characterization, art, landscaping, stories-told-through-environment. And of course: music.
BUT the world is mechanically very shallow. There is a lot to marvel at, but besides the side quests there is nothing else to do, aside from really shitty treasure-chest like PoC's.
All of that: the writing, the characters, the settings, the micro-stories, the world, the way you influence all of that as a player makes it still an amazing game in my eyes: but even as a massive fanboy, of this game and the series in general: it would be dishonest of me to tell that the mechanical aspect of the game particularly good. It's adequate and functional at the best.
