Coded and DDD were the furthest games in the series timeline when it was released, making them sequels. Days was midquel. BBS was a prequel. In fact, every game was either at the furthest point at the beginning or the end of the story when it was released except for Days, which was still a standard KH action RPG style gameplay with its own leveling/character system, which all of the games had. The fact is every game released has been a full chapter in the series, regardless if it has a number at the end or not. A more appropriate name would be a side-game, but they were not spinoffs. An actual spinoff would be something like Kingdom Karts, a drastic departure from the series while still retaining the series name.

For awhile Nomura was working on FFXV then he got taken off, they also had to switch engines from Luminous to Unreal 4 because everyone who really knew Luminous was on FFXV. They really didn't get into full development on KH3 until 2013 or so, if I'm remembering correctly.

The fact that you think these games are spinoffs is crazy since the games are directly relevant to the overarching plot and a lot of shit has gone down since II. III likely won't explain everything to you. II didn't with CoM, and more stuff has happened with the more recent games than what happened in CoM.

Maybe they aren't up to snuff with II, since attacks don't have enough weight to them and there are balancing issues, but its a HUGE step up still from KHI which had an extremely simple battle system and had really retarded platforming segments.

I hated the drop mechanic even though you could buy items that let you refill the gauge, I don't think anyone actually liked it. Just let me play each world with Sora and Riku respectively, but don't force me to swap in the middle of something, christ.
I also hated the petting minigames and shit. Collecting the monsters and levelling up their skills was okay, but having to ''play with them'' ala Nintendogs was awful.

I still don't understand why they did that. Chain of Memories already ended on a huge reset button (sora and his friends forget everything from the game, Riku was just a copy, Namine was just fake memories), it was the perfect excuse to start Kingdom Hearts 2 from a fresh start without any chain of memories clogging. Instead the game starts by making a big mystery out of "what the hell happened to Sora" and then never going back to answering it. Sora doesn't care that he was in a crystal ball for a year for no reason and he doesn't try to figure out who this Namine person he's supposed to thank is either. And he never actually thanks her for that matter. What kind of story-telling is that?
