Midgar in FFVII remains my favourite part of any JRPG to this day, there's just so much care that you don't see in other titles.

That game was likeable to me because it had great mini-games that were better fundamentally than the actual game. Im willing to bet im not alone, either. I'm pretty sure lots of people were less engaged/motivated by the story as a whole than the chocobo raising and golden saucer games.
It's the same with FF8 desu, I dont think I even finished that game once I got all the Triple Triad cards, since that's all I cared about.

I'm the anon who has never played VI, I wasn't defending any game, just giving an opinion.
The game put saturday cartoon morning theatrics in a high production ( for the time) package and timed it for the release of a very popular console. It was a recipe for the adoration of every 7-14 year old in the world, leading them to grow up shilling it to everyone they know.

I really enjoyed both the theme and the mechanics of the game. I loved the characters as well, but that is probably more due to nostalgia. I loved V and VI but they just weren't on the same level as FFVII imo. From the mini games to the fantastic material system, it was just an incredibly satisfying game.
Plus how many modern-times-based turn-based RPGs exist?

I what I liked most about the game was the game play. by the game play I mean how when I played the game I wasn't a lonely autistic loser and I still had my whole life ahead of me and everything was great but now it's different.
