I think it depends. Would you consider a game like Go or Chess to be escapism, or only a mental exercise? If you would consider it the latter, then I would say that only some games (RPGs and movie games for example" are primarily escapism based, others are more skill based and entertaining as a mental or physical challenge
I can enjoy vidya sober, but taking a beer or two while playing shit like CS is really fun times, especially if you have a few friends to play with. I rarely if ever do drugs and if I do, I don't play vidya. I did once try playing CS after few bong hits and I fragged surprisingly well. I also tried to play vidya on LSD but it was too disorienting so I just listened to music instead.
