How do I get into the Megaman series?

To understand you need to watch every episode of Captain N and the Game Masters. Next start with MS DOS megaman 1&3 then play X7 and Battle network 4 if you don't like those games Megaman is not for you.
Start with 2.
If you liked it, move on to 3 and 4.
If you liked those, try out 1 even though it's less refined than the previously listed.
If you still want more, play 5-10 in any order. I personally recommend skipping 8 entirely, and maybe skipping 7 if you're not into SNES sprites (it's a fun game otherwise). 9 and 10 are among my favorites if you're still looking for guidance at this point.

Play them in order. They're numbered (except Megaman&Bass, which is between 8 and 9) so it should be easy to follow.
I recommend not skipping the first one. It's definitely rough compared to 2 and beyond but it's still worth playing in my opinion, only skip if you're really having actual trouble with it and don't like it, I still have trouble beating Yellow Devil without the pause trick.

Oh, and at some point in the series check out Megaman V for the Gameboy, it's an original game in the series with original bosses (unlike the first four Gameboy games which reuse bosses from the NES games with only a couple new ones) and probably one of the best designed games in the series.

Nah man. 2 is definitely one of the easier ones but it still has tough sections like Quickman's stage (where either the beams section or the boss can be mitigated by Flash Stopper but not both) and Wily 1 with its fucking mandatory item usage and having to stay on a one-block platform against the boss. 4 doesn't really have any tough spots like that to my memory.
