What went so wrong?
>>

no DVD player
>>
>>333424146
This is ultimately what killed it.
Normalfags and their goddamn media players.
>>
>>333424067

What's the little window on the controller for?
>>
>>333424361
Innovation.
>>
>>333424067
Sega Releasing far too many console expansions and consoles prior to the release of this one putting them in massive debt. Making them get out of the console race because they can't afford it due to terrible money management.
>>
>>333424329
But the Dreamcast was released around the PS1 N64 generation. so that's wrong. and even if it was competing with xbox gamecube and PS2. only the PS2 had a DVD player so Nintendo and Microsoft should have failed just as hard.
>>
>>333424067
>piracy
>poor design choices (no dvd player)
>>
>>333424361
The memory card that was also a form of Tamagatchi that changed with each game your were playing.
>>
>>333424067
well for starters

>no r1 r2
>no second analog stick
>extremely limited disc space
>no dvd player
>saturn had already failed hard
>>
>>333424673
PS2 came 2 years later, everyone knew about the dvd player and just held out for it.
>>
>>333424067
Dodgy power boards. There was a DIY fix, but lots of people ended up dumping their Dreamcasts because they'd randomly reset after half an hour's gameplay.
>>
>>333425085
Nah. Pretty sure the colossal failure of the Saturn and massive loss of profits that Sega was suffering from because of the Saturn before the release of the Dreamcast was the nail in the coffin.
The Dreamcast was just a shell when Ps2 came out.
>>
>>333424067
dpad sucks
>>
The failure of the dreamcast is literally only because of the continued failure or falling through of previous consoles. The console itself is completely irrelevant to its failure.
>>
So what I gathered from this thread is that the Dreamcast was never good and died because Sega was terrible with money and console making.
>>
>>333425637
Yep. And they failed to appeal to the lowest common denominator. There was a distinct lack of football and singing games.
>>
I bought the dreamcast on lauch day.
What killed it was the PS2 hype and Sega name.
I was the only one in my social circle that owned one and everyone was jelly as fuck.

There was literally nothing wrong with the Dreamcast, it's a fine machine. The graphic leap over PSX was stunning, and even when PS2 released, the dreamcast had comparable or better graphics
>>
>>333425085
Nobody I knew held out for the PS2 because of the DVD player. It was just a useful bonus.

Dreamcast was released to early and was ahead of its time. SEGA has always been a major innovator, with the SEGA channel, online with the saturn, DLC, Cross platform play. etc.

Main problems were

>only one thumb stick
>shit d pad
>cord at the bottom of controller
>weird as disc format that still didnt stop piracy

Funny as it is, the Dreamcast actually had good copy protection, you cant just rip a dreamcast game, and burn it right away.

People found out that if you converted it to the disc format only used by karaoke discs, then it would work.

If you want to blame somebody for SEGA losing so much money, blame the autists who constantly feel the need to figure out how to hack systems.

this.

no dvd player along with piracy and being able to burn any game. that's why.

I still loved the dreamcast. Still the best version of MvC2

IM GONNA TAKE YOU FOR A RIDE

Sega gave a big fuck you to EA and other major publishers with Saturn launch. EA gave it right back at Dreamcast launch and refused to put any of their games on the console.
No EA sports, no dudebro sales, failed console.

Sega itself was the problem.
Dreamcast was ahead of its time.

At least it was a great console.

>The console itself is completely irrelevant to its failure.
This is interesting because in a sense it's true. SoA's aggressive marketing and price-cutting actually made the Dreamcast a smash hit, sales-wise, when it released in the USA, and while the console was actively supported, it continued to move units pretty well, at least in America.

However, even having a successful console launch was not enough to make up for an entire generation's worth of poor decisions that really weakened the brand and made Sega lose loads of cash.

>>333424968
I wonder about this, because dual analog was in no way the standard in 1999, even with the dualshock controller. Console FPSes weren't a thing, really, and not many games I recall in the 5th-gen even took much advantage of the second analog stick.

Still, I have the thing hooked up even now and enjoy a lot of games for it (like pic related).

>>333425865
Dream cast had anti-aliasing.
It had slightly better graphics than ps1 but the AA mad it look better than early Ps2 games.
>>
>>333427110
>better than early Ps2 games
ain't that the truth. It's funny in some ways, that early Dreamcast (and PS2) games don't really look a whole lot better than say, the N64.

Of course, by the end of the PS2 generation you see a massive increase in developer know-how (and the same for the Dreamcast : 2007's Under Defeat looks pretty incredible for a Dreamcast game).

Utterly terrible marketing
Easy as piss piracy
Not having porn in the Japanese market

I still like the dreamcast a lot though. I never bought a PS2 (was given one for free near the end of it's life cycle. Would play at friend's house before that.), but I had 2 Dreamcasts.

>>333427110
Anything looked better than early PS2 games with that horrible blurring effect they used on EVERYTHING

>people still think the DC was a failure

Memory card had a little screen. VERY cool idea for some games. In football games you could choose your play without others seeing. Or playing casino games, during poker you could see your hand without others seeing what you have.

Someone just made falppy bird homebrew for the memory card
