what is the origin of this?
I believe it comes from MMOs with a cartoonish look. ie WoW or SWTOR.

I think it was around the time of World of Warcraft because character looks like carTOON but for me people start calling it more when League of Legends came out, same reason as WoW: the characters look cartoonish.

there was a free disney MMO called toontown where they were called toons by the game. when these people turned 13 and their parents bought them a WoW subscription they infected the vernacular.
