Because people weren't asking for the same game, they wanted a genuine remake that keeps the core game intact while fixing things up with more balanced mechanics, more content, improved graphics, fixing plot holes, etc.
Look at say, Pokemon Heart Gold/Soul Silver. They're complete genuine remakes that changed so much of it that it still feels fresh and new, but they kept the story as is with a few extra bits, and most importantly kept the gameplay intact.
Oh and that "play the original" excuse is just stupid. Microsoft used that same damn argument back when they announced the XBone was going to be always online, they said "If you don't want to always be online, there's always the 360." We all know how that turned out.
