Is Oblivion good? Is there more quest variety than Skyrim? I don't want to have to keep going to some dull dungeon to clear out some skeletons every other quest.
Also should I start out playing totally vanilla or are there some essential mods to start with from the beginning?
>>
>>333360459
Most people consider the unoffical patch to be a must.
>>
It's pretty shitty and everything looks like it was made out of playdough. The writing is terrible.
>>
>>333360459
You are better off with mods or some kind of overhaul. They are all in a bit of a hole right now, with the current versions being buggy and shit and the mod makers not putting in any effort into fixing said mods. So I would only recommend patches and Realistic Leveling.
>>
>>333360459
I enjoyed it.
I couldn't say that the quest variety is any better than Skyrim. It similarly has a full array of daedric quests, mage's, thieves' and fighters' guild quests. I'd put it overall about the same.

Oblivion is noted for its worse dungeon design comparatively.
>>
When Oblivion released, it was easy to look past it's issues because of adventurous the game felt. Playing it now isn't going to have the same effect, and if you're thinking of playing it after you've played Skyrim, you probably won't have enough fun.
>>
>>333360459
Garbage game. Pretty much opened people's eyes against the whole open world you can totally do everything bullshit.
>>
>>333360459
The quests are better than Skyrim's are. Oblivion Thieves Guild and Dark Brotherhood quests are commonly picked for being the best questlines in the series. There's also the Arena, several quests specific to each castle, and the Oblivion crisis provides some good dungeons if you feel like diving into hell (although they get really repetitive after a while). You can still craft custom spells in Oblivion, provided you are in the Mages Guild, and there are more varied effects you can apply. Overall, I'd say the only ways Skyrim is better is graphics, unified art style, and better voice acting.

Was the whole VA budget blown on Sean Bean and Patrick Stewart?
>>
Take what's good about Morrowind and Skyrim.

Now remove all of it.

There.
>>
>>333361608
Probably.
>>
the quests in Oblivion are a lot better than Skyrim's imo
there's tons of mages guild quests, and the dark brotherhood and thieves guild quests are infinitely better than skyrim's
>>
>>333361793
Mages Guild was great in that you actually felt like a normal member of the guild for most of it. Skyrim has literally one quest before you get approached by the Psijics and it becomes apparent you're special. But then, Skyrim really did that the whole time with the Dragonborn thing.
>>
>>333360459
Play with ooo and maybe some graphical mods. that's all you really need it'd it a first time play through
>>
>>333360459
I prefer Oblivion over Skyrim, mostly because of the magic system. You could cheese it so badly, my favorite was enchanting all my armor with maxed out chameleon (20%) so that overall I was over 100% chameleoned constantly. Attacking guards would have them first run up to you to try and arrest you, but if you refuse then they run around shouting, not knowing what to do. Utterly hilarious!
>>
>>333360459
Oblivion is straight up a better game than Skyrim. It doesn't rely on gimmicky bullshit like "le comfy chopping wood xD". The game grabs your attention with its quests and the quality of its writing. The premise is interesting and none of the NPCs are jumping on your dick out the gate because you're the chosen one sent out to defeat the ancient evil that awakened. You can just tell the people who shit on its graphics are underaged.

>. Oblivion Thieves Guild and Dark Brotherhood quests are commonly picked for being the best questlines in the series.
Opinion. The Thieves Guild was uninspiring and the Dark Brotherhood are a fucking joke, a bunch of clown, unprofessional faggots that fail to live up the name of the Dark Brotherhood of Daggerfall. Not only that, it made the King of Worm a fucking faggot.
>>
gameplay and quests are better and while its butt ugly when npc faces and render distance come into play, i think the visual style when youre in a pitch dark dungeon lit up by a torch, especially in those shivering isles ones
>>
>>333364253
>Thieves guild was uninspiring
...are you joking? The questline had you proving your worth as a thief, starting with a secret competition, then having you go up the ladder by stealing goods and pawning them with the occasional quest to steal specific items, all culminating to a grand heist in the main government hub, getting right up to one of the elder scrolls themselves! It was epic!
>>
>Is there more quest variety than Skyrim?
Actually, this is the only factor that makes Oblivion better than Skyrim. There are two quest lines: The Dark Brotherhood and the Thieves' Guild that are really fun and unique. The rest are the exact same as Skyrim's quest lines, i.e go to target, kill target, come back.
>>
>>333360459
Tesgeneral.com for mods. Never play a TES game vanilla.

Oblivion is the best game in the series BTW.
>>
Nehrim = Morrowind > Oblivion > Skyrim
>>
>>333364623
Forgot to add The Arena which is pretty basic, but it had a surprisingly fun story with a TWIST
>>
>>333364117
I'm pretty sure you're baiting, but by the off chance youre not
>quality of its writing
Was on the same level with Skyrim, not too good
>The premise is interesting
The premise was numbingly generic during release, and a decade before that
>none of the NPCs are jumping on your dick out the gate because you're the chosen
Neither they do in Skyrim, because it would require some effort to change NPC behaviour when you do something, like, slay the doomsday dragon
>people who shit on its graphics are underaged
I agree that using graphical quality as one of the driving points to condemn a game is childish.
>>
>>333364623
This is correct.

Oblivion goes out of its way to try and make quests not feel like fetchs, albiet it fails in some regard but this anon mentioned the quest lines that are based.
>>
>>333364623
yea I remember the faction questlines being a lot better in oblivion, especially the dark brotherhood. i was really disappointed with skyrim's dark brotherhood being "go here, kill this, get unavoidable bounty and run from guards regardless of whether or not you kill them without being seen or make it look like an accident"

oblivion also had much better houses and customization. maybe this was only a problem on console, but anything you placed manually in skyrim would eventually jump around and fall through shit and scatter all over the floor, which was annoying as fuck.

other than that skyrim was objectively superior. oblivion's dungeons had very low variety of tilesets and every dungeon of a given tileset looked and felt the same.
>>
>>333365365
>skyrim was objectively superior.
I disagree, but I would like you to elaborate
>>
>>333362110
not OP but I'm doing a first time play through.
here's what I have
OOO
OOO Creature Addon
Duke Patricks Melee Combat
Duke Patricks Archery
Duke Patricks Magic
QARL Texture Pack
OBGE
Unique Landscapes
Illumination Within
Better Dungeons
Realistic Leveling
Oblivion character overhaul

Is there anything else I should get?
>>
I loved Oblivion's map but the broken leveling and scaling completely ruins the game.
>>
>>333360459
Quest variety is much better. Side quests are all pretty unique. Like one has some woman begging you to return a staff that constantly summons 2 scamps. This was before radiant quests so Todd couldn't get away with just faction quests.

Also dungeon diving is pretty shitty outside of quest related dungeons or boredom. Knights of the nine and shivering isles will add a decent amount of gameplay along with the house dlc giving you some cool stuff

>>333364253
You're joking right? Final thieves guild mission was one of the best missions in the series. The brotherhood quest line also fit right into them being a group of fucked up murderers. No doubt the mages guild final mission was shit. It was lazy writing and gamebyro's complete failure to make anything not look like shit.
>>
>>333360459
It's... hit-and-miss. It's fun, but it has some fucking terrible flaws.
>>
>>333360459
Oblivion is good with mods

Vanilla Oblivion is atrocious

Getting something to fix the level scaling is an absolute must
>>
>>333360459
Anything is better than skyrim.
>>
>>333365630
Run through it once with no mods
>>
>>333365630
Don't do this. >>333366040

>Duke Patricks

mah nigga. Best combat mods for any tes game.

>>333360990
>>Oblivion is noted for its worse dungeon design comparatively.
By who? Oblivion at least HAS dungeons, not just tunnels that go from A to B and a hatch back to A with a bunch of draugr in between.
>>
>all these fucking games with a billion addons that are basic must-haves

too old for this shit anymore
>>
>>333367702
Only KoTN and SI are necessary. Mehrunes Razor is a decent dungeon, the rest are useless player homes.
>>
>>333360459
first game I ever played when I "built" a legitmate PC back in 2008. I still fall in love with how engrossing that atmosphere was. It's a shame how skyrim doesn't hold a candle to it.
>>
>>333364623
Some of the fighters guild quests were cool like the drug trip one
>>
So which mods are considered the bare essentials if I don't want to spend hours amassing and installing shit?
>>
>>333368653
I kinda like KoTN, only because it requires a bit of lore knowledge and it actually felt like an adventure with some meaning. Plus it forced you to explore the world and look for way shrines instead of fast traveling every god damned where.
>>
>>333366363
come on, ya gotta at least once.....
>>
>>333362020
Well, the Hero of Kvatch literally the madgod himself. So there's that.
>>
>>333360767
Give examples of bad writing. I'll rebuttal.

Oblivion sure isn't that overloaded like Skyrim is. And look at all these comfy areas while skyrim only has snow
>>
Is Nehrim worth playing?
Do porn mods work with it?
>>
>>333365110
The writing in Oblivion is much better cosistently than the writing in Skyrim. I stopped reading there.
