I mostly play socially. It's been a great way to keep in touch with my best bro from undergrad after we moved to opposite ends of the country. A couple times a week we'll get on skype and dick around playing games all evening.
Meanwhile, everyone I knew in the last city I lived in I met through a guild before hanging out with them in person.

I never mention I play video games to anyone outside of friends. Women are definitely the worst people around to discuss video games with. Its even worse when they claim to be fans of a certain game and don't even play it. Not saying dudes are a lot better. But they tend to be knowledgeable about the games they like.
There's still a social stigma surrounding video games too.
