Rushing Providence should only happen if the host's pressed for time, there's a lot of people waiting on an open server, or if the party's really worried about not surviving the next loop for some reason. Otherwise you're better off looping, since players can scale faster than enemies can.
I also think that 8 Clovers should be the priority in virtually every situation, the only reason I can see getting a different one is if you're the last one alive and need to wipe out some bosses to prevent a full wipe.
I just started getting into this game. I've unlocked a few of the classes and most of the items. Would multiplayer still be completely out of my league at this point, or could I join a game without too much concern?

Agreed, but I'm just saying that taking one green each before hitting 8 is fine. It's actually not as big a delay as you might think.
At 3 Clovers, you're getting [green] chests at a decent rate, so that's a good time to take a slight detour for a single Heart. You typically hit 4 Clovers towards the end of level 2. Level 3 is also when regular enemy spawn counts start to ramp up, so the timing here is excellent. By the end of level 3, you should still have enough greens for everybody to get a single Heart each. From level 4, it's back to capping Clovers. There is some variation due to RNG, but it's pretty consistent.
By all means, if you can make do without the Heart, go for it, but for the newbies, an earlier Heart makes it a lot easier to stay alive and hit the scaling needed for a loop.
I also considered the game at a meta level when writing that. I'm not surprising anyone here by saying /ror/ struggles to find hosts. If you want newbies to stick around and grow the community (or at least keep it stable) then you need to enable them. A rushed Clover cap benefits the good players but doesn't help the newbies who need a guide and regularly die before getting items.
