Ok /v/, why arena shooter is not a thing these days?
>>333325549
Why aren't smoke signals and doing the Charleston things these days?
10 years worth of cawwa dood dominating the market.
The process of decasualization is going to have to be slow, and start with spoonfeeding the poor malnourished console babs. Luckily, one game is up to the task already.
>>333325732
but /v told me it was the epitome of skillbased shooters
>>333325732
Too complex for phone calling twerking casual plebs
>>333325549
Too fast and the learning curve is way to steep for average Joe
Also, no "progression". casuals play to unlock stuff, not to get better
>>333325948
What game is that?
I'm going to get called all kinds of names for this; but it's due to casualization and the market opening up to non-enthusiasts.
>>333325549
Play UT4 you shitter, it's free, and judging by your broke ass english, your monkey ass would fit right in.
>>333326261
The latest Doom I think. It's basically Halo.
>>333325549
consoles.
you can't play UT or Q3 with a controller.
You can't put an unlock/progression system in a true arena shooter
I dunno OP, it was the only fps type I could be assed to play in addition to mass slaughter types like Doom or Serious Sam.
>>333326361
fukn lemao
>>333326330
I'm just drunk senpai, sorry. And UT is not a thing, faggot.
>>333326265
>guys im gonna post an unpopular opinion n get hated ;)))
>posts popular opinion
This isn't reddit anon, you don't have to try and people to upvote your shit just say your fucking opinion
>>333326408
It's funny because both of those are on consoles.
>>333326265
I don't think anybody disagrees, even developers.
Epic has UT4 underway and they're pushing some throwaway MOBA harder than they are UT4.
>>333326408
Categorically incorrect.
>>333326559
There's more to PC gaming than steam my dude
too hard for the average player
>>333326605
My fucking opinion is you're a cunt
because arena shooters don't have loadouts. and kids these days are autistic and only care about customization and looking at things, they don't care about gameplay or the quality of.

Basically this arena shooters are way too fast paced to be played well on a controller.

You guys should really check your privilege.

As far as i know they're still being played.
Any of you faggots wanna play QL with a relative nooby? Maybe we could exchange friend eachother?
Yuro here by the way.
>>333326936
We've already established that console players don't want to play games at the absolute highest skill possible, the point is they can still play it even if they're using a control scheme that isn't ideal.
Because they are becoming easy and the developers are focusing on making it "competitive" eSports. When you casualize a game but try to make it competitive it creates a game which LOOKS like it is hard but in reality it is easy due to large hitboxes, overpowered weapons and zero map design.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O6_WZG3u7eA
Take the DOOM beta for example. Not once did I feel like it was hard or I had to try for my kills, I just felt like I was spamming. DOOM is also coming with an eSports mode and a focus on competitive play. It really does depress me, I miss real competition.
>>333326715
>League of Legends
>Starcraft 2
>Princess trainer
What else? Where's is your "more"?
>>333326408
Let's not forget that Timesplitters 2 and 3 are some of the best arena based shooters around and they were console exclusives. That's all I got in terms of great console shooters though and even those games would have been nicer on PC if that ever happened.
>>333326408
>hurr it's the consoles fault
fuck off faggot just because consoles exist doesn't mean the PC user base just disappears
Arena shooters stopped because you can only play the same game for so long before you get bored
C'mon it's not that bad senpaitachi.
>>333327348
u mean like call of duty?
>>333326408
UT3 was good but nobody gave it a chance
>>333327427
>parkour
Fucking kids these days.
>>333327480
UT4 already shits on UT3 and it's barely developed.
>>333327480
wasn't it more the problem that you couldn't play all the modded and player made shit that was what made ut 2003/4 so popular?
Someone once pointed out that games stopped being about fun and be more about how much they can impress you around time when they stopped putting big head mode in them and I kinda agree. Actually cheats like that in general need to come back but nobody does them anymore, just beneficial cheats often in the form of fucking DLC no less.
>>333327480
UT3 was crippled UT2k4 with fatmuhreens at best.
>>333325549
they require more than 30fps and fov higher than 80

Are you retarded? UT4 is in development right now, you can only play it through Epic's launcher. Don't ask about a niche genre if you don't want to work for it, baka

I liked the Black update, felt like a heavier UT99 but servers were long dead before, during and after the update.
What does 4 feel more like? 2k4?

>>333329126
kek oh boy
>>333328806
why is it so fucking slow?
>>333328913
Like a midway between 99 and 2k4. Double jumps are gone, you can slide, vehicles aren't in yet and weapons are rebalanced TTK-wise.
UT4 is out faggot
and there's also plenty of indie Arena shooters. Reflex, Toxikk, Xonitic
People seem to forget that the Counter-Strikes betas were becoming massively popular around the same time UT and Q3A were in their prime. You also had games like Rainbow Six and countless mods for other games. Arena shooters had been the predominant style for most of the previous decade and people were looking for something different.
>>333329250
Probably noob.
Than it strange announce voice bothers me.
>>333328913
4 doesn't even have double jump or dodge jump
>>333329571
4 has dodge jump and dodge ramps built into every map.
>>333325549
The Arena Shooter genre was heavily dependent on the Linux community to run servers. Many of the hardcore late 90s community either were already Linux users, or got into Linux through playing those games.
When gaming shifted away from the PC in the early 00s as a result of Microsoft buying some companies, and paying others to focus on their console it was effectively the death of gaming on Linux and as a result the arena shooter genre. With games like UT3 that advertised Linux support but ultimately dropped it to go primarily for the console audience becoming massive flops.
It is unsurprising that with the resurgence of Linux as a gaming platform that new arena shooters like Unreal Tournament 4 are once again in development and once again targeting Linux users.
The intervening years weren't entirely a waste for the genre. Open source projects like Xonotic and Warsow carried the torch.

>l-linux is relevant you guys..!
>f-free software always wins..!
just a sec, I need to spend points into speed and buy the attack power item first

holy fucking shit linux users believe this
>>333329742
Tell me what you think a dodge jump is.
>>333329104
I got the footage in 2 games moments before the BETA servers were going down. I decided to do a tiny fragmovie at the very end because I was bored and wanted some gameplay.
>>333329774
>mistaking finally getting thrown a bone as being the target audience
I guess you'd have to after being left out in the cold for the entire lifespan of your OS.
>>333330648
Good job at showcasing what a fucking drag the game is.
>>333330092
>>333330382
>>333331018
Remind me again what platform is good for servers. This is about the one case where Linux has been relevant for gaming. FPS games needed users to run servers, and the users who could run the servers weren't going to run them for games that they couldn't play.
>>333331726
There were plenty of non-arena shooters that had linux servers, though.
>>333331969
Right, many of those games also had Linux versions because in order to produce a Linux server the game engine itself had to run.
More often than not Linux servers in that period led to a playable native Linux version.
Unreal Tournament 4 is a free arena fps that needs more players.

There hasn't been a really remarkable one released in literally decades.
>>333325549
d44m is an arena shooter
>>333327440
You have to be a special kind of stupid to not see how CoD has changed massively over the years, unlike arena shooters which have been stagnant after UT2K4.
>>333329341
Which are all slightly tweaked HD remakes of games from 1996-1999.
>>333335591
>2 weapon loadouts and perks
>pickups are overpowered weapons that instagib people
halo was better as baby's first arena fps, that shit doesn't qualify
>>333331726
Services that run servers are going to do it regardless of whether the game's playable on a specific OS or not, because more often than not it's a source of revenue - they're running servers for other people, not themselves. They'll even run old as hell windows server junk if the game is relevant. The sequence of events is game is relevant -> servers are required -> linux maybe, not the other way around.
>>333335912
they are still arena shooters
