by the time we started getting DQ games we had also gotten 80 other JRPGs that were far more complex in both gameplay and story.
i mean fuck, grinding, random battles, and turn-based battles were considered massive game design flaws in the early 2000s, and all those were hallmarks of DQ.

Also DQ in the West was doing actually good but squeenix just decided to abort everything, I guess they moved the budget to support the marketing of FF

Bravely Default was marketed as a return to form classic JRPG and people considered THAT game to be too simplistic and repetitive.
