Defense was your chance to dodge attacks and didn't do anything to reduce the damage you take.
It's a huge trap because although you can wear better armor defense also raises your combat level. You could have 40 attack and 50 strength at the same level as someone with 40 attack and 99 strength because that second guy didn't raise his defense or prayer.
