Friendship levels impact combat. Basically, you can link with a party member during battle, much like the recent Tales games. By linking with a certain party member, hanging out with them and by playing cards with them you level up your link level. Each new level gives them a new ability to use together with you, like countering, finishing the enemy off, blocking etc.

Also, once upon a time, there was an old game series called Relics by Bothtec.
They had Falcom develop the last entry in the series, called 'RINNE,' and Falcom released it on the same day as Oath in Felghana so it was basically put out there to die. It plays like nothing else Falcom's made.

I personally think Ao is best in the series (Especially gameplay wise). Sen is just huge craft-fest which you can break very easily. Heck during my gameplay bosses could not even get single turn by how badly the battle system can be exploited.

I've always compared Cold Steel to GUST's PS3 games since GUST is another small low-budget company.
Falcom's environments look better than GUST's early PS3 titles but holy shit the character models are terrible. They look about as bad as Atelier Rorona which was GUST's first 3D PS3 game, but GUST went from that to Totori which had fantastic character models while Sen II looked identical to Sen with some slightly improved animations.

Man, I loved the Nord Highlands so much. The music, the scenery, the first droplets of actual plot seeping in. But god fucking damn that horseback travelling across a huge empty field got pretty annoying pretty fast.
As for Laura and Fie's conflict, that just took way too long to resolve and it turned out to be about absolutely nothing. At least the Machias-Jusis relationship was interesting to see.

A lot of the English voices are actually improvements over the Japanese cast, IMO.
For example Fie's English performance actually fits her backstory better, instead of just being a generic Rei clone voice.
Laura's English performance slips at times especially early on, but on the whole it's till better than the nasal garbage her Japanese VA puts out.
Rean's VA injects some life into his performance instead of trying to parody the voice of a LN protagonist.
Machias and Jusis actually sound like highschoolers instead of grumpy old men.

As for the rest of the cast, I think they did an amazing job. Rean was great, and it was pretty fucking annoying when his lines weren't voiced during scenes when everyone else's lines WERE voiced. Hope they put a little more money in Cold Steel II's VA budget, there were a lot of scenes in general where half of the scene wasn't voiced.

Most of the seiyuu's in the game are more well known from anime, but Rean and many others have been in other games as well.

I'll be honest, a lot was lost on me. I did a lot of research on the game in order to prepare for the role and I have to say it definitely helped me figure out Rean's character and place in the world. However, recording a game is pretty confusing. I'm just alone in a booth with a book full of lines and some notes from the director. Also, a lot of the script isn't recorded chronologically, so it's not like I'm voicing it start to finish. Obviously, I have a good grasp of the story, but there are still surprises for me as I'm playing through the game. It's funny little things like the fishing. My notes didn't say anything about the context of my lines there. When I was saying "What even IS this?", I had no idea I was talking about some sort of Erebonion Eel or whatever.

It really does take some getting used to. The confrontation is always weird, like you're watching your aunt's wedding video and you can't believe that's your voice in the background. But once I decided I was serious about my voice acting career it is, as you said, something you learn to cope with early on. I couldn't have gotten over it without my friends and colleagues though. The voice I thought was weird and "unlike me" all this time, was actually my real voice, and there's nothing wrong with it. And by changing it ever so slightly and with different inflections, I can play a whole lot of different characters. It's really fascinating. But as I said, it's something you cope with early on yes, though I wouldn't have gotten this far without friendly support, I can guarantee that.

Not him but the issue is most of the stuff that happens in CS isn't worth spending hours covering. I haven't played the Crossbell games but most of the time I was playing CS I kept thinking "boy all that stuff happening in Crossbell sure sounds more interesting than the nothing happening over here."
I mean everything that's actually relevant to the overall plot of the game and series happens in the last 20 minutes of the game in the epilogue. Almost everything before that feels like filler. There's nothing wrong with a little filler but a filler game just feels like a waste.

I think Falcom was trying to worldbuild because before that point the Erebonian Empire hadn't really been shown beyond "those militaristic assholes who want to invade us" so the field studies were supposed to show how big and diverse a place it is.

Yeah, I got that, but it's not like we really needed an entire game to drill that point home. We already had plenty of hints of that from the fact that many of the Erebonian characters in the previous games is generally pretty likable (Olivier, Zechs, Mueller, etc) and it's pretty clear it's a normal country like all the rest that's just overshadowed by a scummy upper class and a militaristic leadership. The problem is that they spend 40 hours drilling this home in Cold Steel and spend minimal time on developing the characters who almost all feel like cardboard cutouts with barely any character like Zane did in FC. Then it sort of rushes through the terrorist plot, sets up a really poorly executed false ending to that plot for the sake of a tweest ending that makes it feel like the entire game was a waste of time because everything important happened in the ending with little build-up beyond "there is a civil war brewing and the nobles have some trick up their sleeve to match the army and are working with the terrorists." Half of that happens in the last chapter of the game before the final chapter, too. There's a serious issue with the game when you could cut out half the game and still have the same plot and effect to it. So much of the game feels irrelevant. There's less substance to the game than FC and FC was about two thirds of the length of CS.

Just stuff showing you that "the nobility is planning something" which is hinted at as early as SC with people mentioning that conflicts between the factions were rising in the Erebonian embassies.
