So /v/. How the FUCK do I do this quest? Do I really need to make an insect glaive and cheese it, or can I feasibly do it with a light bowgun or gunlance?

I did it with HBG. Use smoke bombs and the fence to fight them one at a time. Kill whichever of the first two is harder for you so you don't have to deal with it at the same time as jho.
I did it with Switch Axe but it wasn't easy. Fucking Apex Diablos. Not sure I'd be confident enough to do it with GL.

It could be much better. Attacks while you are frenzy buffed should count towards knocking it out of apex and hits on non bouncing zones should charge wystones. I think it's a decent way to change up a fight but waiting for wystones is pretty unfun.

I haven't really employed smoke bombs in my strategy in the whole 15 or so attempts I've made. I finally stopped being lazy and grabbed some ivy, so hopefully that helps.

IG is easiest because topple is just too important against Diablos and Jho, but it's certainly doable with most weapons. Getting noticed by both at the same time is pretty much an instant restart though.
Diablos is an asshole, but Jho will ruin your day with constant frenzy and attacks that take nearly all of your health. Have a farcaster ready for emergency healing at base camp, and have the materials on hand to make another one just in case.
