Both are great, although for completely different reasons.
Persona has a bigger emphasis on characters and story, whereas SMT focuses more on raw gameplay and atmosphere.
Only played Persona for now. Played 1 and both 2s. 1 was great (except the Snow Queen quest). IS had likable characters and an interesting story. EP I didn't like as much, but it still had likable characters and an interesting story once it finally picked up from where IS left off in the third to last dungeon.
Been playing Persona 3 and I'm up to July 27th. I am just not understanding why this is apparently one of the best JRPGs of all time. The battles are alright, Tartarus is alright despite being randomly generated, the character AI is retarded and has gotten me killed on more than one occasion, not much of note happens expect on full moons and some other random events here and there... I just don't get it. I was looking forward to buying P4G with a Vita too, but if it's just more of the same I thing I'll have to stop playing Persona here.
So I think I'll start mainline SMT.

It's even worse senpai. P4 took the shitty dungeon aspect of P3 and hardly improved it. All you get is different music and a different setting. There's nothing else to it, they're all designed exactly the same way. If you liked P1/2 more, you'll like mainline more, since those two are more similar to SMT than the modern Persona games.

Most series are independent of each other, with games within them having varying levels of conection between them. Both P3 and 4 I felt suffered from fairly major mid-lateish game pacing issues. Although I thought 4's pacing in general was a whole lot of fuck. 3 had a good start and end. That being said I just enjoyed the character interactions on a daily basis so I didn't struggle all that much to get through it mostly.

I prefer SMT. Only played Persona for a short period of time, but it was enough to tell me it wasn't for me. When a game makes you watch cutscenes and read text for more than an hour before getting to your first battle, there's something wrong.And then it gets worse because your first battle is tutorial shit, then half an hour of more text, then you get another battle and it's still against these easy, pointless, unchallenging tutorial type shadows
I might give it another shot someday, but I'm not really a fan of VNs
