Why do people complain about this again?
>>
>>333213536
It's to get people locked out of their current/older/ other accounts so they have to rebuy their games. This isn't about security, only a moron would believe that.
>>
>>333213536
Because I don't have a smartphone so I get to wait weeks for my marketplace transactions.
>>
I don't mind it, but I can see how people without an Android or Apple phone would be upset. The idea isn't bad, but how it's becoming essentially mandatory is what's making people angry.
>>
Some Russian apparently got my password, but luckily I had this set up so I was bombarded with new authentication codes on my phone. It saved my account.
>>
>>333213874
>Because I don't have a smartphone
How do you function?
>>
>>333213969
Not him, but I honestly could live without it. All I mostly do is talk or text. I like checking email, news, etc. but I really only do it if I'm out of the house and bored somewhere. I don't feel like I really need it to function.
>>
>>333213721
Take the tinfoil hat off, jimmy, momma made fish sticks and they're waiting for you on the table.
>>
>>333213969
Not everyone defines their existence by superfluous internet usage.
>>
>>333213721
Not quite, it's mostly damage control from that whole leaked account information debacle; any compromised accounts will result in a PR shitstorm for Volvo so they're taking beyond excessive steps to protect retards from themselves in order to avoid this.

My account password was literally 12345 for five years and I never so much as got an email about somebody trying to get on my account. I know why Valve did it, it's just beyond obnoxious
>>
>>333213969
I don't need to shitpost on the go, anon. I can do other things during my free time

Not that guy but I use a regular Nokia phone.

I don't see the appeal of buying glorified $800 alarm clocks every year when the hardware burns out because its on all the time.

A regular phone with a battery that lasts 7 to 8 days is the best phone you can buy.

Smart phones are for zombies with disposable incomes who fear social interaction.
>>
>>333213536
Because some people are dumb enough to own a windows phone
>>
>>333213536

people are complaining about valve shoving it down our throats. I actually like steam guard itself.
>>

>$800 alarm clocks
you can walk into a walmart (if you're american) and get a garbage $10-$20 prepaid phone

>Smart phones are for zombies with disposable incomes who fear social interaction.

>>
>>333214517
>Phone dead or missing
>lol good luck logging in faggot
I'm fine with an email if I'm trying to sell something for over $5 but we're way past that point
>>
>>333214462
>>333214597

You're one of those people who still believe you can basically get a phone for '''''''''''''''''free'''''''''''''''''' or for $10 on a prepaid plan, aren't you?

Instead of a phone you guys should buy a vita or a 3ds, much better than a glorified $800 internet machine.
>>
>>333214406
The price point isn't valid any more. I remember talking to someone like this before. "Yeah, I got this phone for $50, I don't need a smart phone" when I had a smart phone at the time that was $50 too, with a contract. But that person also need a contract for his flip phone, he didn't buy it outright.

The battery life you're correct on, though. I've had two days where I've barely used it at all and it would still need to be charged in that time.

Durability can come into play too, but it's usually just retards that want super duper picture quality on a tiny screen so they buy a phone with a fucking glass screen instead of plexiglass.
>>
>>333214406
No way senpai, you can use a smartphone without being a fucking zombie, the sheer usefulness outweighs the pricetag, especially if you don't go full retard and get the newest one.

Having the ability to access all your files (say, for college) is fantastic since you don't have to print them out or carry a laptop with you.
>>
>>333214660
You're one of those people who still believe every smart phone is $800, aren't you?

>should buy a vita or 3ds
Nah
>>
>>333214741
This. Having an internet browser, phone, MP3 player, radio, camera, watch and so on on a small rectangle that fits in your pocket is beyond useful.
>>
>>333213969
That shits expensive and I don't need it for anything.

Not like I ever liked phones anyways. I've got Skype and that's enough.

My Cell Phone makes calls and that's all I need it to do. Even then I barely use it.
>>
>>333214281
>damage control
There was no damage to control for that 'accident' and almost everybody already forgot about it.

The real, actual reason is because it's mostly children that use Steam. Children are stupid and Valve is cheap, so instead of hiring more customer service, they can toss in a useless feature or two so they can say it's your fault you got trade scammed and continue to not actually do anything about it, but make it seem like they care by putting in more 'security' features.

Valve would willingly go bankrupt before hiring an actual support staff.
>>
>>333215348
Valve already has a policy explicitly stating they will not undo trades that were alleged scams. Even without any sort of safety features [especially mandatory] they're legally clear unless the issue was from their end anyway.
>>
It sure as hell makes selling a bunch of cards or items difficult.
>>

I love my smartphone but come on.
Most people could get by with call and text just fine.
>>
>>333214741
>>333214715
>>333214850
>>333215076

Smart phone/Google/Samsung/Microsoft apologists detected. It may be useful in some cases but pretty quickly you realize you rely on its basic functions as a phone 99% of the time. It's all smoke and mirrors and gimmicks as far as I'm concerned. The only thing smartphones have going for them over older phones is better internet browsers and cameras. Radio and Music is done better on older phones that have better sound chips. Internet browsing is a waste of time and only useful in a very small amount of circumstances, usually when you've allowed technology to erode traditional skills which have quietly atrophied. And with the cameras, let's be serious nobody wants to look at your pictures, you're not a photographer and nothing you see is unique or interesting. A thumbstick drive would also be better for file management than a smartphone considering how redundant its use actually is.

>>333214850
Vita and 3DS can at least provide you with real entertainment on the go not just 4chan.
>>
>>333214741
Buy, I sure am glad I can read this 15 page document on my small as fuck smartphone screen.
>>
>>333215509
This isn't about legality, it's about children whining how it wasn't their fault. Go check CSGO's Steam forum and see how many threads you can find about someone whining how they got trade scammed. The more security features Valve crams in, the more the community will police itself and tell everyone who got scammed that it was their own fault, and if they think that, they're less likely to waste Valve's time with it.
>>
>>333215653
I do mostly just use it for talking and checking email, but it was like the same price as any other phone that would accept a modern SIM card. Seriously, they're all $50+ now even for a flip.
>>
>>333215076
You fail to understand that there are people who don't need a phone that does anything more than calls and texts.
>>
>>333215793
In the real world it creates a false sense of security resulting in people being extremely careless with their accounts.

>>
>>333215964
>In the real world it creates a false sense of security resulting in people being extremely careless with their accounts.
Agreed, and we can see that with car accident statistics. But again, Valve doesn't care about that. The consumer thinks it's more secure so they'll be more willing to buy and think it's their fault if they fuck up. Valve gets more money from it and that is literally the only thing they care about.

I use mine for a variety of shit, including emulating more than even my PSP, in fact, including a large amount of PSP games. And DS games too. Drastic is still being worked on but eh.

besides it's ease of use, i'm gonna have a phone with me at all times, might as well use it for a bunch of stuff. Battery life is a total non issue, I have at least ten portable batteries that hold like 8+ hours of charge each.

If you don't like smartphones that's fine but they're hardly bad, they're the next step in cell phone tech.
>>
It's a shit fucking service. I got robbed of my phone and had to get a new one, with a new number, and Steam offers no way to change the number if you've lost access to the phone with the original number.

Don't tell me to use their support, if you think they can help, you've never used Steam support.

>>
To me, the real practical usefulness between owning a smartphone and a regular candybar phone or flip phone depends on how much free time you have.

I don't have "free" time. I'm constantly driving, cooking, working, playing, shopping, being with friends and any other thing you can think of. When I'm not doing those things I'm at home and I have a computer to do all the things a smartphone does and better. For what it matters I don't have time to read a book unless I sit down and actually read a book. My car plays music off a USB drive and professionally I can't be seen listening to music because that looks like slacking off in my profession.

The people I see making lots of use of their smartphone features have free time; their work involves a lot of downtime or they use public transit. Or they're inconsiderate shits using their phones over the conversation of others. If I still used the bus to go everywhere I would use a smartphone but I don't.

I think there are many lifestyles that don't demand a smartphone to make efficient use of your time.

It's really fucking stupid considering smart phones aren't even that secure. I bet more people lose their smartphone on a train than they lose their wallet.

I have a smartphone and I think it's really useful, but it's stupid to make life more difficult for your customers who don't have a particular device.

Nintendos new reward system revolves entirely on their miitomo app, which means there's tons of their loyal customers they're cutting out. Not to mention the app is still buggy. I would expect them to release the miitomo app for 3DS and WiiU at a point which might make things a little better.

It was originally a 3 day trade hold for people who didn't have the mobile guard set up.
Once Valve noticed they didn't have too much opposition they changed it a month or so later to a fucking 15 day trade hold that also now applies to selling things on the market. The market is unusable for people trying to sell items that don't have the mobile guard now, might as well not even bother trying to trade, and since this was changed after mobile guard was introduced I'm pretty sure a lot of users who opted into it have no idea that the restrictions tightened up this much for those without.

I don't have a smart phone and I travel a lot, switching back and forth between using my desktop and using my laptop.

I like to sell steam cards and use that money to buy cheap games and/or games that are on sale. Now as you might know, Steam will lock you out of selling on the market for a week if it detects you on a new computer. Now, add that to the fact that if you sell anything with even a slight amount of worth, you have to log into your email and into your browser, where it'll almsot always say "You are logging in from a new computer. Go to your email and enter a code we sent in order to continue". So it winds up being extremely inconvenient.
Besides that, since I don't have a smart phone, added to these inconveniences and the 7 days I have to wait for switching computers, the market puts my cards on hold for another 15 days simply because I don't have the mobile autheticator app. So I have to wait almost a whole month to sell things on the market. And by that point the price I wanted to sell my cards for will be too high, as generally the value of things on the market go down over time.

Fuck Mobile Authenticator.

There is absolutely no reason for this to be SMS based and require a mobile phone.

It should be solely Android app based Open Key Authentication like every other authenticator on Earth. Works fine for Google, BNet, GW, Every bank, etc.

Open key android would allow it to run on a phone, tablet, android emulator, etc. Way easier to use, way cheaper, more available to every user.

Being SMS based just screams Valve harvesting phone numbers for advertisers.

>Still need a new phone to recover it on

Good idea
>>
>>333213536
Because it forces you to get a phone that runs either android or iOS, so if you're not locked into those two systems then you're fucked over and have to wait 15 days for fucking trades/market sells/anything.

Also, some people don't like the idea of giving Valve their phone number and installing an app just to fucking sign in.

I use the desktop authenticator, which is buggy as hell and third party, but it's better than trying to use it on my phone, which can't run Steam.

It's clear that Valve only added this thing so that they no longer have to deal with scam reports, as they've claimed that they will not deal with you being so called "hacked" anymore because you have two devices.

Yeah. Literally every other service just requires you to check your email. Even fucking government websites don't do mobile authentication as a necessity. Valve is insane.
>>
>>333220574

Yep, this is fishy bullshit. There are literally hundreds of online games and non-gaming services that all us OKA based authenticators without any need for SMS, phone numbers, or even a real Android device (Open source software like Winauth can simulate Open Key auths if you have the recovery codes to set it up).

Valve meanwhjile wants them juicy phone numbers and flat out refuses to comment on why they don't do authentication like everyone else.

>hardware burns out because its on all the time

I'm with you on the don't need smartphones to live thing, but these are false.
If you actually believe you have to buy the new iphone every year, then you're just as ignant as the consumer zombies. There are plenty of cheap ways to get a smartphone for $20-$50 without a contract.
The hardware does not burn out after a year. If you're not careful about the battery, that could die quickly. But I don't think I've ever seen a phone actually get fried even with heavy usage on demanding apps.
As for battery, yeah they're not that great. I get maybe 2-3 days of nonusage on my phone.

Do you know how people figure out all of your accounts and get access to your account in the first place?
Through your email.
If your email is ever compromised, you're fucked. The attacker now knows every account you have that's linked to it, and can go on to reset passwords, do social engineering or whatever.

Having another wall outside of your email is the safest way to do things.

But kids using their mom's credit card on CS:GO will STILL find ways to be scammed. Every person with half a brain knows this. Attempting to patch on new ways of "authentication" and "protection" for these retards is useless and it's gone past being overly concerned, to being actively detrimental to users.
They've always stated frpm the very beginning that customer support will not give you your items back if you are scammed, and have continuously added new messages/features relating to this (messages in trade window detailing how you will not get your items back after a scam, email confirmation, etc), and that was plenty without having to resort to the current authenticator.
I find Valve wanting peoples' phone numbers to be sketchy as all hell. They're sure not getting mine.
>>
>>333224362
Their official response is "hurr too many people got scammed/hijacked/viruses on computer so they're vulnerable to email verification as well"

Also an asston of people were abusing the scam/hijack report system to duplicate high-level items, as when your items are "scammed" valve makes a copy of your items and gives them back to you

So theoretically with two separate devices it is now impossible to get scammed, valve no longer worries about dupes, and they can fire the single guy who was working support tickets.

by the way you can emulate android on pc and still authenticate through steam that way although it still exposes you to the potentially of getting a RAT on your computer and losing everything on steam

they still need your phone number though use skype or google talk or some shit

Canadian, we don't get phone numbers for free through these (In fact we can't get them for paid either, they're unavailable. Our telecoms are nazis)

>But kids using their mom's credit card on CS:GO will STILL find ways to be scammed

I didn't say it'd actually work. That's just their reasoning.

Everyone knows those kids will lose all their skins betting/gambling, then use their parent's credit cards again, and Valve will make more money.

But this way they don't have to deal with support tickets, so it really just reduces their workload because now they can just ctrl+v "lmao you had authenticator we don't reverse trades or give you shit back good bye ticket is now closed"

True, it shouldnt be mandatory (for traders at least). also the 15 days cooldown is a stupid, who would wait 15 days for simple card to card trade or cheap tf2/csgo item

they need to add some kind of limit where it doesn't kick in until you start selling over 5-10$ or something a day. card sellers are happy because you're never going to sell more than that per day, and scammers are still blocked because the limit is so slow. hire me valve
>>
>>333225723
No one would wait that long. That's the thing. They're trying to get more and more people to give out their personal info by making it harder on the people who don't.

It shouldn't have been mandatory at all. They could've just slapped on some bonus for people who do get the mobile authenticator like a discount or some free item, then all the traders and children would naturally flock to it like flies. Problem solved.

>cellphone signals
don't use a shitty provider like AT&T and this isn't an issue, most providers have at least minimal signals across the entirety of the states, and some semblance of a signal worldwide. Plus 4G.
>batteries
portable battery. costs 10 bucks and some can charge your phone up twice or even three times to full capacity from single digit battery %
>>
>>333224869
You only have to input it the once, then you can set the device to remember you.

>>
>>333228081

no, don't pick a shit one in the first place. You said you just use a landline, if you're deliberately going to sabotage yourself by picking a shitty carrier like AT&T, more power to you.
>coverage issues don't exist
again, if you pick a competent carrier, they don't.

>>
>>333228401
I'm not him, but I don't think you grasp what an emergency is.
>>
>>333228909
what does he mean then, or what do you mean? In what possible situation is a landline going to help you in any significant manner that a cell phone couldn't? Taking obvious precautions that any average person takes is not above and beyond anything, either.

Oh and let's not forget good luck using your landline to call someone when you're being mugged.
>>
>>333229184
It is ironic that you are arguing against a redundant system in a thread about two factor authentication.

Despite your best efforts, your mobile will not always work. It is unlikely your battery will be running out at home, but sometimes your provider can fuck up and you will lose signal, if only for a little while.
What if your phone is lost or destroyed? In the time you are between phones, without a landline you will have nothing.

Seeing as you do not control the world, even if you do everything right, you only need one OTHER person to fuck up to remove the option of using your mobile phone from you.
>>
I don't even own a smartphone.
>>
I have a smart phone but I use winauth anyway because it's a pain in the ass to open the phone every time I have to log in to the browser
>>
>>333213721

You'd actually have to be pretty dumb to get locked out of your account, to be honest.

I literally reset my phone to factory settings without disabling mobile authentication. But it was okay, because when you enable mobile authentication in the first place, STEAM GIVES YOU A RESET CODE in case this exact thing happens.

In order to get locked out of your account, you would have to:

1) Deliberately enable mobile authentication
2) Lose the backup code
3) Lose or factory-reset your phone

Don't do those three things in that order, and you'll be fine. And if you're still worried, just don't use mobile authentication. Steam Guard makes it pretty safe, anyway, if you're sure no one is going to break into your email. If you already use mobile authentication (or any similar mobile security feature) for your email, there's no reason to use it for Steam as well.
>>
>>333224194
