That isn't the case. Yasu is a person without a 'base' personality the average mind uses to build on when acting like someone else. All of his alternate personalities are thus closer to powerful mood swings, bringing completely new goals and ideologies into focus at every change.

1-4 are fairly traditional murder mysteries with a meta element.
5-8 are almost entirely meta-commentary with a murder mystery buried in there somewhere.
1&2 are pretty rough and just set-up for what happens later.
3&4 are great.
5&6 have some great scenes but also focus on the worst character.
7&8 are divisive. They have some good scenes but they have no real tension as the meta elements become even more important and the second worst character becomes a major role.
Overall I enjoyed Umineko and after hearing stories about how shit the ending is I was pleasantly surprised. Higurashi is a stronger story overall.

Umineko has more troughs to go with it's peaks.
Everyone in Higurashibesides Akasakawas at least interesting enough to carry their story. Sure it doesn't have a character as good as Battler but it also means I don't need to put up with characters like Erika, Frederica and Ange. Also Higurashi did a better job of fleshing the main cast out overall, in Umineko there are some characters with just so little to go on like Hideyoshi or Krauss.

I liked them, I just wish there was more about them. They always died very early on in each story and didn't get much in the way of development besides Hideyoshi being basically a nice guy and Krauss being basically naive and incompetent. Honestly look back at the story and try to find the biggest scene they have, Krauss has his fight against Goat-Kun and Hideyoshi slapped Evatrice the one time but neither of them had any big backstory scenes or badass scenes the same way other characters had and it left them feeling flat by comparison.
